Allison Transmission Question

Just purchased a 2003 32 foot Southwind about 2 weeks ago. Its a Workhorse with a 8.1L V8, I want to make sure I have all the maintenance covered. Couple of question I am trying to confirm answers to is;

1. How often do you need to service an Allison Transmission, i.e. changing the fluids as well as the filters ect.? I was told by the local Allison service department, if iTransynd Synthetic Fluid was used then it was good for 150k miles if it didnt then around 80k.
(There are a little over 52k miles on the MH.

2. Did Fleetwood use Trasynd synthetic fluid in the Allison Transmissions back in the 2002/2003 time frame? I called the orginal RV Dealership and was told Fleetwood used Transynd in the transmission. Is there a way to confirm this?

Thanks
  • Thanks everyone! I will check for a label today after work but suspect I will have it changed out anyway. Previous owner said he never changed it.
  • Just remember that whenever you change the transmission fluid you also need to change the small spin on filter. The filter has a magnet attached to the inside that must be removed, cleaned, and attached to the new filter.

Actually, Workhorse is the one who installed the transmission and selected the transmission fluid. No!! Allison fills the transmission and delivers it to the chassis builders. Allison also dictates which fluids can be used.

They or your Workhorse manual would be your best source if info assuming there is not a "Transynd" label on or near the transmission dipstick.

Sorry Harold, but Allison supply the transmissions without oil. The chassis manufacturer fills the transmission after it is installed and all cooler pipes etc have been fitted. Fitting the cooler pipes to a full transmission would make a hell of a mess.
Allison produce oil specifications for their transmissions, and also have a list of approved oils, but the chassis manufacturer chooses what the initial fill will be. As long as it meets the specs it is ok.

Transynd often has a horrible brown colour when it has been in service for some time.

When you buy a used vehicle it is probably a good idea to change ALL the fluids if you intend to keep it for some time.
  • Look along the top of the radiator (from the rear of the MH). Mine had a sticker on it saying it was filled with Transynd when I bought it used. It's a 2005. I had all of the fluids in it changed so that I know what is in it. I'd change it so you know, then not worry about it again. And get several different quotes. The cost seems to vary widely from shop to shop.

  • If you use dex3/mercon every 25,000, if you use transyn 150,000 must have fluid tested for breaking down. Pre 2004 Allison used dex3. I use Napa Dex/merc 3 Dino oil and change it at 25000
  • IN 2003, all Allison transmissions came with Dextron III fluid. In 2006, I believe they switched to Transynd. Regardless of what was put in the transmission from the factory, the Allison recommendation NOW is to use Transynd in their transmissions.
They recommend a complete drain and fill with Transynd, and changing the external filter. After 20,000 miles or so, drain and fill the transmission again with Transynd and then you can use the Transynd extended drain intervals.
The problem with using mileage, etc is that this really DOES NOT indicate when you may have to change your fluid because of other factors. If your transmission was overheated, because of a long hill climb, or other reason, the life of your fluid has diminished and may need to be changed ASAP. High transmission temperatures shortens the life of your fluid.

  • Fleetwood had nothing to do with the fluid in the tranny.
I suggest you go to irv2.com and join the chevrolet/workhorse forum. Loads of information and there is an Allison forum also.
