Best route

Need a little advice..
Leaving central California, heading to Dickinson, Nd.
Trying to avoid climbing months if possible.

Are the climbs through, SLC, and Wyoming Ok? Or should I add several hrs and head north through Idaho and around to the north

Any experience would be appreciated

I have a 96 bounder 34 J with a Toad

Thanks in advance
  • Thanks for the replies. I also found this ... http://www.violette.com/Story-N.aspx?rcd=999...which pretty much sums it up and if it's no worse than Donner, then we'll probably be OK without having to disconnect the toad. Think I'll just hang it down in low gear with the four ways on and take real easy this time.
  • The ride from slc east on 80 to the park city turn off is similar to the grapevine. Once you get to wanship on 80, not bad.
  • tropical 36....we've been in Salt Lake for a week and left today for Logan Utah. We were at Mountain Shadows in Draper.

Wish I would have known you were in SLC at the same time!!

The climb headed east on 80 is pretty steep, almost worse than Donner which we came over last week heading for Utah.

There is a grade on I80 from SLC to Evanston, WY. Is your plan to take I80 east to Cheyenne, then north? I'd be more concerned with cross winds west of Cheyenne. If you take I15 to Butte, Mt you will have some grades on I90.

Leaving SLC east on I80 I just take it slow. Use the right lane & flashers.

I know this thread is a couple of months old, but will give it a go anyway. We'll be leaving SLC tomorrow on I80 east for Evanston and beyond. I don't have a problem with grades but my tranny don't like them too steep and too long when pulling the Jeep, so could anyone tell me what % and how long this grade might be and also the 3 sisters further east? We did come over Donner's pass without a problem, but it's not all that bad from the western approach. Still don't know what grades we encountered on that one either and the internet as per say, isn't much help.

LOL....I was just trying to miss as many as possible
    Probably worrying about nothing....

I'd do I-80 to Salt Lake and I-15 north to I-90/94

to get out of the Ca central valley you must climb.

  • Between SLC & Wyoming on I-80 there is a pretty good climb - depends on what you're trying to avoid. We had no problem with it whatsoever with our rig. You may be able to avoid some of that climb if you use I-84 from Ogden east to I-80, but you'll catch some of it.

Not sure Idaho will help much. We have mountains too. :)
