Black tank question

I dump both tanks after every trip we make. If the tank is only half full, fill it up to at least 3/4 and dump it. I always like to keep the tanks clean because if not you will have tissue sticking to the walls making your sensors worthless. You will start getting inaccurate readings.

Thanks to everybody that responded, I figured I would get several different opinions on this subject now I have to decide what I want to do.

There are apparently lots of people that worry about black tanks. Unless it has a leak in the bottom, they are simple things that don't take a lot of fussing with. I have used mine for short trips and as overflow guests at the house. The one thing that I do if not traveling and using the tank enough to fill it is to add a septic tank/RV - Marine digesting liquid. What it contains are bacteria that naturally occur in septic tanks that liquify any solids that are in the tank.

It is not meant for when traveling and dumping as it takes time to work, but in your case it is just want you want. You can find it at hardware stores. I have never "flushed" my black tank in the last 14 years and it contiues to work just fine!

I flush at every stop.

I empty it when it gets too full. Sometimes in the middle of a longer camping session, sometimes at the end of a camping session.

If it is not very full at the end of a campout, I'll fill the tank with water before I store the RV, then dump it at the beginning of the next campout, after my road miles have done a good job of mixing everything up and getting solids into suspension.

Depends on whether you're feeling lucky.....

Picture a tank full of poop that's floating in water. The water evaporates and what's left behind...:h. If you feel there will be sufficient water left in the tank until the next use, then let it be. Mr. Murphy usually visits me when I do something stupid, but your mileage may vary....just sayin......Dennis

Most of our campin trips do not fill the black take, and sometimes hardly at all. But I will always empty it when each trip is complete. I will always have a large liquid to solid ratio in the tank. I don't feel the need to have the tank full in order to empty it. Just a good ratio.

If you are letting it sit more than the week between weekends, I would dump.

I dump and flush after every trip despite how small or short. That said I have access to my septic and can dump at home. I am not certain what I would do if I couldn't do that. Likely pay the $5 to dump at a local CG. I just cannot imagine stuff sitting in there for weeks at a time. Some do it and have no issues. I like to make sure I have no issues.
