I have noticed the oil pan on my 2007 coach's C7 Cat has a lot of surface rust on the oil pan with most of the paint peeling off. This is the shallow oil or 19 quart oil pan. I was just wondering if anyone has had the same problem and what they did about it. Maybe I shouldn't worry about it but it does bother me as I don't need a leaky oil pan.:h

Caterpillar sells their paint in spray cans.Sand to good metal (use ospho or other to remove rust if salt has really done a number on the metal).Paint with the same paint used at the factory.

My oil pan got to the point that it had to be replaced - oil was actually oozing out of it. The price for a new Cat pan with gasket in the US is about $400 in Canada it's almost $800, tack on 2 hours labor and it's north of $1000 to fix. You would think that Cat would have figured out a way to keep this part from rusting. My toad is basically the same age and the oil pan is as good as the day it was installed.

Must be a common problem with C-7 and maybe others, my '05 is also pealing and rusting. No way will I use the same Cat paint as Brett suggests (unless Cat gives it to me, which I doubt) seems like a job for Rustoleum High Temp.

Many of the CAT oil pans, as well as other parts of the CAT engine rust and, some severely. As you can see in the pics I present below, mine was seriously rusted. Very large flaking etc. And yes, I called CAT and, they had one in stock, at just over $400.00 and, they had the gasket and it was around $75.00, if I recall. I called some sand blasting and powder coating establishments in our area and, by the time it was all said and done, it was going to be very close to the same price. So, I figured what the heck, I'll tackle the job of scraping, sanding, wire brushing, primering and painting. After all, it's my labor and, I'm retired so, who cares. What you see is about 3 hours work. And, it was done right at, 3 years ago and has not deteriorated to the point at which I started. I used some cheap, "Yellow" paint I had hanging around, along with some left over primer. Scott

The aluminum pans are the DEEP SUMP pans.

The stamped steer are the SHALLOW SUMP pans.

Just make sure that the oil plug area is well reinforced and thick enough. Aluminum is softer than steel and all it takes is one oil change where the technician overtightens the steel oil plug and manages to strip out the threads on the pan and you'll be looking for yet another oil pan (or some kind of fix).

Mine did the same thing. Sand and paint. Just like the entire rest of the chassis. I use Rustolium brush on. Give a little thicker coat than spray.

A quick internet search showed that there are a few places that sell ALUMINUM oil pans for a C7. It might pay to check on one of them to end the rust problem for good.

My 2005 C-7 oil pan paint is still shiny. No road salt down here.

That is weird unless you drive a lot on icy roads where they use salt. My coach I bought it new in 2003 and the oil pan paint still looks new. No rust at all.

But I agree with some of the posts that it would not be too hard to repaint it. Remove the old paint and rusted areas, primer it, and paint it. A person should never allow it to rust all the way through the medal. That is crazy!

Your pan looks like a sister to mine, being a cheap skate and a cobbler I was thing about sanding it off and coating with some high temperature Rustoleum paint maybe with a brush. I have had good luck with rustoleum paint.
