RE: dry for Canton

Several of the towns close to Canton have had elections and parts of one county are wet, part dry. A lot of Tyler is wet, I don't remember all the cities that passed the ordinances. Basically it came down to they wanted to keep the taxes paid for alcohol in their counties instead of seeing it go out of town.

A group from our FMCA chapter in So. La. goes every yr. for the 1st of Nov. sales. Lots of fun and the girls get to do much of their Christmas shopping. We always park on the edge of the big parking lot next to the creek. Big event for the guys is on Wednesday when they open the back gate for the vendors. The parade of vehicles is a show &1/2. All kinds of vehicles from newer pickups w/trailers to old school buses with junk hanging off the sides like the Joads & Clampets. The area we're in is FHU w/30A, sewer, water & cable. It's starting to cool off by then. While the girls shop, guys do most of the cooking. We get lots of inquiries about the cooking aromas coming from our area as lots of folks from Tx, Ok, Ar, Ks. etc. have never smelled Cajun food while it's cooking. Guys, just remember the county is "DRY" so come prepared as it's 15+ miles to the nearest wet town.

Enjoy

Mill Creek is 1st rate, they used to have a free BBQ on Sat. of Canton Weekend, and the shuttle bus is great to get around. If you have never been there Canton is not just one flea market, it is the whold town with several major areas. You can also camp right in the parking lot of the main flea market with full hook ups if you get there early enough to get a spot. But the electric is kinda iffey. If you get in there don't miss the Pickin and Grinin music circle in the evening after the park closes.

We have visited the "First Monday Trade Days" in Canton many times over the years but now have a home-base that is only about 20 minutes travel away, so we no longer take the RV.

Have not stayed here, just seen the commercial. I think this is the new park someone was referring to.

Canton is not far from the Tanger Outlet Mall in Terrell. When driving on IH 20 you will see some other RV parks on the highway. A lot of the RV parks near Canton offer a shuttle.

If you don't have the map of Texas and the info books, call 800-8888-TEX and they will be glad to send you one. Also ask for the books on state parks, camping in Texas, National Parks - Davy Crockett is one.

If you are new to Texas, most of the Rest Areas with bathrooms have wifi. Also not far from Canton on IH-20 is Tyler. There is a state park near Tyler. I don't have the exit from the IH-20 but the same exit is a Tiger refuge and another RV park with full hook ups. If you are in Tyler, get directions to the Rose Museum. If you are coming in October, I want to say the 1st weekend, it might be the 2nd weekend is the Rose Parade and celebration. Always lots to see and do.

If you are interested in buying or selling some stuff, the 3rd weekend in April and October is Highway 80 yard sale. There is a RV park in Mineola where you can get a site, then take tables and stuff to sell up to the edge of their parking lot. Some day I hope to do that. If you are looking, just start where highway 80 starts in Mesquite (it runs parallel to IH 20) and drive it all the way to somewhere in Louisiana.

We live close by Canton. I would recommend the Canton Trade Days - Civic Center camping. If you can't get thru and reserve a month ahead. Try calling the Thursday and Friday of Trade Days and ask about cancelations. There is a new campground along Interstate 20....between Hwy 64 and 19 on the east bound service road.

I have attended the Canton Trade Days in Spring and Fall for the last 8 years. I have always stayed at the Civic Center where there are about 150 full hook up sites at $30 a night, 3 night minimum. The parking is next to the flea market and very convenient to walk there and back to your RV when you need a break. The reservations must be made a month prior to when you want to attend. There are limited sites with 50 amp hookup so those go fast. Any length RV will fit the sites and there is room for a tow car also. The parking is all gravel but is very level and drainage is great in case of rain. Reservations can be made at 903-567-6556

Mill Creek Ranch RV Resort is a great RV park near the trades day grounds and with shuttle service to/from the grounds. Only problem is getting a site for 1st Monday weekend unless you make reservations well in advance or get really lucky.
