Class A heating question

I have a 2005 Fleetwood Southwind 32V. When I turn on electric heat, the furnace also comes on. Heat comes from both the roof units and the floor outlets. Can/should the gas furnace and electric heat operate at the same time?
  • We have the Basement heat pump along with an Atwood propane heater.

    Setting electric Heat

If I set higher then 3 degrees, the propane comes on. Once it reaches the room temp it will shut down and then switch over to the heat pump. If however the heat pump does not produce heat it will switch back to propane. This is all due too the thermostat.
So it is better to first find out what type of system you have and the thermostat installed.
  • Mine works the same with a 5 degree offset. Example= if the inside of my coach is 60 and I set the thermostat to 70, both heat pumps and the furnace runs up to 65. Then the furnace turns off and the heat pumps attempt to bring it up to 70 inside.

works well on really cold mornings
  • But when set temp is reached, the gas furnace(s) should shut off. If the electric heat can maintain the set point, the gas furnace(s) should not come on again. The dual action is just the method of getting to the set point faster.
  • When you turn the electric heat on make sure the thermostat is set no higher than 3 degrees above what the temperature is. Most setups I have seen if the setting is over 3 or 4 degrees the gas heat will also run.
