The OTA connection and the satellite connections have nothing to do with each other and they are not interchangeable so you cannot violate anything.
Most all Dish receivers have a built-in option to connect and OTA TV connection or one can be added.
No worries at all.

I'm not real sure of this splitter idea. Some of the newer DISH receivers do not have a provision for the OTA input. A OTA converter can be added with a USB port connection, then it is added to the channel register and can be recorded. The receivers sent either a pulsed or steady voltage back to the receiver dish, and you could be violating FCC regs by a connection like this. If I'm wrong, please let me know.

THIS IS CORRECT. HOWEVER, YOU COULD JUST NOT BOTHER WITH THE CHANGE AND USE YOUR ROOF MOUNTED OVER-THE-AIR ANTENNA FOR NETWORK RECEPTION WHEN YOU TRAVEL. YOU COULD ALSO INSTALL A LOCAL TV ANTENNA AT HOME SO THE DD WATCHES OTA PROGRAMMING WHILE YOU TRAVEL.

Then there's Dish pay as you go option. Since we seem to travel every month, don't believe the option of turning it off is going to be used very often. But then, it's HD...a nice bonus. Not sure if the smallest package includes the "affiliates."

PERSONALLY, I HAVE FOUND THE SATELLITE SD PROGRAMMING IS TERRIBLE AND I SIMPLY DO NOT WATCH A CHANNEL BROADCASTING IN SD. I ONLY HAVE A 32" SCREEN AND IT'S STILL TERRIBLE. THE BIGGER THE TV GETS THE WORSE IT SEEMS TO BE. FIRST YOU CUT OFF BOTH SIDES (REDUCED FROM 16 X 9 OR 5 X 4 FORMAT) TAKING MY 32" DOWN TO ABOUT THE EQUIVALENT OF THE 20" ANALOG IT REPLACED. THEN, UNLESS IT'S AN OLD B&W PROGRAM I FEEL LIKE I NEED TO CLEAN MY GLASSES OR SOMETHING. ONCE YOU'VE HAD HD YOU WILL NEVER GO BACK!

X2 Bill. Besides, How can you tell which stars have had chicken pox unless you have HD? They aren't as perfect as they want us to believe.

I have Direct TV and like it. The only problem that I've had is with our local NBC TV channel. I was stopped from watching it for two days due to a squabble from the local NBC TV and Dish! NBC is upset over the Hopper that Dish uses which allows you to skip over commercials. This practice from my understanding upsets the local TV channels (they want you to see the local advertisers TV ads).

No satellite TV or cable provider can give you a signal as good as the over-the-air signal. If you want to watch the Super Bowl with the best quality picture available from any source you need to watch the OTA signal as it is the only uncompressed full 1080 signal available. The next best options are, in order, Fiber Cable, Satellite TV, Internet, Standard Cable (some of which is still analog and at the very bottom of the list).

I have to agree with Bill, I don't know what kind of TVs people are using, but there is a large difference between SD and HD. At parks, we usually watch SAT rather then the supplied Cable that the parks furnish because of the SD pictures. We have been back and forth between DIRECT TV and DISH, and we own the receivers for the MH. For us the picture from DISH is better with DISH than DIRECT TV is really better. The last time we changed to DIRECT TV the tech that came out said that we would not have as good a picture as we were getting from the over the air antenna. Both suppliers have had problems with their equipment, and were quick to have replacements, but DISH has been quicker and does has better equipment. The Hopper seals the deal.
