This sat issue is confusing at best.
We have cable at home.
We can get a pretty good deal to switch to Direct. Will need a portable antenna as our kingdome is being phased out (or so we are told) And we're not ready to invest in "the traveler" yet.
answers in CAPS, not yelling!!
NOT TRUE. KD WILL NOT BE ABLE TO SUPPORT DISH CUSTOMERS IN THE NEAR FUTURE WITH SOME OF THEIR ANTENNAS BUT THIS HAS NOTHING TO DO WITH DIRECTV CUSTOMERS.
But no HD to go with that lovely new TV we installed. And then there's the local channel issue... I believe that when we ask to have the locals changed, our DD at home will be out of luck.
THIS IS CORRECT. HOWEVER, YOU COULD JUST NOT BOTHER WITH THE CHANGE AND USE YOUR ROOF MOUNTED OVER-THE-AIR ANTENNA FOR NETWORK RECEPTION WHEN YOU TRAVEL. YOU COULD ALSO INSTALL A LOCAL TV ANTENNA AT HOME SO THE DD WATCHES OTA PROGRAMMING WHILE YOU TRAVEL.
Then there's Dish pay as you go option. Since we seem to travel every month, don't believe the option of turning it off is going to be used very often. But then, it's HD...a nice bonus. Not sure if the smallest package includes the "affiliates."
HERE IS WHERE YOUR KD WOULD BE A PROBLEM. YOU WOULD NEED TO PLAN TO USE A SEPARATE ANTENNA AT SOME POINT BUT, DEPENDING UPON THE AGE AND TYPE OF KD ANTENNA YOU HAVE NOW YOU MIGHT BE OK FOR AT LEAST SOME PERIOD OF TIME.
So... back to direct again...
DIRECTV DOES OFFER DNS (DISH DOES NOT) BUT YOU CAN'T HAVE BOTH LOCALS AND DNS SO THIS SERVICE IS BEST FOR FULL TIMERS OR MOST TIMERS OR FOR THOSE WHO HAVE ALL OF THEIR RECEIVERS SETUP FOR DNS AT HONW AND IN THE RV BUT THEN YOU REALLY DO NEED A HOME OTA ANTENNA.
opinions?
PERSONALLY, I HAVE FOUND THE SATELLITE SD PROGRAMMING IS TERRIBLE AND I SIMPLY DO NOT WATCH A CHANNEL BROADCASTING IN SD. I ONLY HAVE A 32" SCREEN AND IT'S STILL TERRIBLE. THE BIGGER THE TV GETS THE WORSE IT SEEMS TO BE. FIRST YOU CUT OFF BOTH SIDES (REDUCED FROM 16 X 9 OR 5 X 4 FORMAT) TAKING MY 32" DOWN TO ABOUT THE EQUIVALENT OF THE 20" ANALOG IT REPLACED. THEN, UNLESS IT'S AN OLD B&W PROGRAM I FEEL LIKE I NEED TO CLEAN MY GLASSES OR SOMETHING. ONCE YOU'VE HAD HD YOU WILL NEVER GO BACK!
I have to agree with Bill, I don't know what kind of TVs people are using, but there is a large difference between SD and HD. At parks, we usually watch SAT rather then the supplied Cable that the parks furnish because of the SD pictures. We have been back and forth between DIRECT TV and DISH, and we own the receivers for the MH. For us the picture from DISH is better with DISH than DIRECT TV is really better. The last time we changed to DIRECT TV the tech that came out said that we would not have as good a picture as we were getting from the over the air antenna. Both suppliers have had problems with their equipment, and were quick to have replacements, but DISH has been quicker and does has better equipment. The Hopper seals the deal.
