I am very disappointed in Cummins Engines. I took my Dutch Star in for an exhaust manifold leak and then the problems started. After removing the exhaust manifold, bolts broke off in the head,they found the head would not pressure test to specs, results new head was required and manifold, the turbo charger had to be replaced, the fuel pump leaked when it they went to finish and start it and resulting in having to replace w/ new fuel pump and new fuel lines. So I got a new exhaust manifold, new Head, new Turbo Charger, new fuel pump and lines. the parts alone cost over $7500. plus tax & labor to install. I have 84000 on the MH. You would think a cummins engine and related components would last longer than 84K miles and 11 years. I'm just venting!!!!

But it has been 11 years I would think this is not out of line

Unfortunately leaky/broken exhaust manifolds is a common 8.3 problem. I have several diesel engines over 25 years old (never been into) so I do not understand "but it has been 11 years".I did not know Floyd's Truck Center of WY had a location in Denver... they tried to rip me off will all kinds of repairs I did not need. They did not like it when I filed the same amount of metal 180 out from the vain that had a small nick at the tip on my turbo. Why a new turbo and hope by fuel pump you do not mean injector pump. Did they charge you for AC charge/freon even though you can remove the head without taking the lines off the compressor? What was the pressure test reading with the new head compared to the old readings? Hope you kept your old parts.Let me know who did your work so I can stay away from them too.OP, I'll give you $750 "on the blind" for your old parts (assuming injection pump and that they ARE your parts) and pay the shipping to 30512. *Actually I'll be able to pick them up in July. Most all of these problems could be traced to poor maintenance by the owner. Now, I'm not saying the OP was lacking in maintenance, but i am saying there is more to this story than one persons venting. How many fuel filters did he install in that 84K miles? Did he get water in His fuel? How many oil changes has he performed? Did he use the right grade of oil? Has he let the motor idle for extended periods of time? Did he fail to let the turbo cool before shut down after a hard pull? Did he let the motor lug around or did he try to keep the RPM's up? See too many unanswered questions to blindly blame Cummins for a bad product. Especially after 11 years.

I dont trust these big shops. I have had to many times where they want to hang parts and run up the bill for no reason.

Yes that is why I have my bus engines turned down my 8v71 is not putting out near 318 HP and that is the way I like it. it is a dog up hills but I am not interested in drag racing.

A 8.3 ISC turned up to 350HP will be lucky to make it to 500K miles, but one making 250HP or less should make it without any major problems. They know we are not going to put that kind of miles on a MH so like fire trucks, they sacrifice longevity for power.
Unfortunately the OP did not keep his old parts as I was serious about buying them as that is how certain I am that he got had. With all of those problems, how did it even make it into their shop without overheat (pressure leak) and the turbo not working well enough at 5000'.

A diesel engine should easily and I mean easily go 500K miles and OTR trucks rack up a million miles with annual maintenance. Ouch

Shane Perch is correct. Now they got sleeves for Cummins and Cat engines that did not originally come with sleeves. So that is no problem. All these engines though with a little luck will easily last half a million miles with no problem, but the breaking down can happen to any engine. I worked with locomotive engines which are big diesels and they would break down when you least expected them just like the little diesels on coaches. The important thing is that you hope they break when you have warranty or else it is expensive.

some engines you can get a salvage sleeve. I know for the Cummins 5.9 "B" series which is a parent bore block,, at Fort Leonard Wood they "dry" sleeve them. I think the same for 3126E cat (c7) can be sleeved. but better to get a "C" series Cummins or a DT 466 or a C9.

I've been Rving 10 years, own a gasser and alway wanted a diesel. We boys like our toys! I'm learning that diesels don't last forever. Two friends just spent big money for repairs, the last with a very similar situation to yours, he spent $8,500. Repairs cost money and a lot more that just five years ago. So don't feel bad about the negative comments, it's fixed, now go enjoy.

Well! I do not blame the original poster for being upset. I also was upset when I blew up two Cummins engines. One thing I will say is that Cummins made them good. But it is still very hard to take that two brand new engines under ten thousand miles would blow up.
