Down sizing...

Been considering down sizing from a 35' class A to a 25' class C on a Ford chassis. The one I'm looking at is a 2012 Coachmen Concord w/15k miles. Appears in excellent condition and owner is asking 40,000. Does anyone have knowledge of this make and model coach who could provide me with a bit of 'first hand' information primarily regarding quality and asking price. Thanks/ Larry
  • I have not looked. But the price sounds high to me. Three years ago my rig was close to that number.
  • I've generally been satisfied with the quality of construction my '98 Coachmen, bearing in mind that it's more towards the entry level of things. The electrical and plumbing and other mechanical systems seem to be properly and neatly installed. (The electrical wiring, in particular, is professionally done compared to some of the horrors I've seen pictured here.) I like the layout, and there seems to be generally reasonable access for maintenance and repair, such that it may have been designed by someone who actually has experience RVing.

On the other hand, the cabinetry is basic/lower end (a lot of fake woodgrain appliques and particle board/thin plywood) and in places the fit and finish of it and other interior trim details is occasionally a bit sloppy. The hardware and faucets and so forth are rather on the cheap side. It clearly is built to a price point, but I think they pinched pennies in appropriate places and avoided doing so where one really shouldn't do so.

I have no idea how much any of that would still apply to a unit built a decade and a half later.

  • I only have research info and drove a couple and I would call them low end, low quality. I rejected both the used Coachmen I visited and drove because the quality just wasn't there. And they both had big ticket issues reflected in the price...below market for the size and features.

If you've not seen it yet, might be worth a visit, but be willing to walk away unless you're confident you can handle the issues it might already have or could have in the near future (research needed on your part to tease out common issues with that year and model). One issue I remember with Coachmen was the electronic module that controls most of the dash gauges going belly up all the time. And one of the two I drove had that issue.
  • The rig appears to be priced 6-10 K below comparable rigs for sale on the internet and at dealers.
