My husband and I are new to traveling by motorhome. DH used to be in the long haul trucking industry, and he said that he used to try to avoid running through Colorado because the DOT staff there could be pretty miserable to deal with. He is wondering what kind of treatment motorhome operators get in Colorado, if any? Has anyone had any issues with DOT in Colorado?

MH do not have to stop at weight stations or and nothing more than a regular car would have to do.

The police have to have a reason to check your car, or motorhome. They can not stop you for no reason at all, and start "Searching" for a reason that they pulled you over for.Now commercial trucks are another matter. They placed a camera over the entrance to the weight stations many years ago, specifically to catch drivers without a seatbelt on, and have a officer man the TV screen to watch for non-seatbelted drivers. Many states also take a IR camera picture of the rigs pulling into the weight station. If the tires are all glowing a little bit red, it means that each brake is working. One super hot, or one that is cold, they will check for further inspection, because they have 'reasonable cause' to think that a brake has failed either rubbing while driving, or not applying and warming the brake drum.You will not need to stop in a weight station, so the only time they might inspect your breaks is after a accident. Have fun! Colorado is a great state to visit, especially the suspension bridge that is 1,000 feet over the river, near Canon City. And the Durango Silverton RR. Fred.

You will likely have more trouble with the weather than CDOT. Been going in and out for 10 years and no issues.

OP: Your post states "driving" through Colorado. I certainly hope you'll be stopping, too. :)

Colorado is one of our favorite states for RVing and we've been visiting about 15 years. We've never had any issues whatsoever. I really hope your husband doesn't pass Colorado up because of past trucking experiences. It's VERY RV-friendly.

I have not had trouble in CO, but Nebraska is another story. Got stopped by a trooper because my outside rear tire hit the white line. He wrote me up for leaving the lane of travel. ugg

Only concern I'd have in CO is what the driver in that 4-wheeler (Car/pickup) is smoking.... And to be honest.. That is a concern in 47 other states too (I am unlikely to drive in Alaska or Hawaii), as well as our nations Capitol.

Actually recent Colorado news reported issues are about PROFILE stops for vehicles after LEAVING Colorado.
Police from surrounding states are checking for people who bought WEED while in Colorado.

Don't bypass Colorado it is a Beautiful state

Been RVing in Colorado for 12 years. No problems here except for dodging bad weather on the passes. Besides the Sunday football games, don't drive I70 westbound on Friday afternoon or Saturday morning and Sunday evening eastbound during ski season.

The only thing I would mention about driving in Colorado is that you should avoid driving through Denver when there is a home football game. Traffic can be a little heavy at that time. Other than that, no problems.

I like to call it "Welcomed" in Colorado. CDOT had reason to help keep commercial drivers safe by checking brakes and lights, but the law as Ivy says treats us "Special".

Enjoy Colorado, IMHO it is a GREAT RVing state.

OP, didn't you knot that we RVers are special. Even got a special exception so we can have 24K lbs on a single axle unlike the normal 20K max. Now you can enjoy CO without CDot giving you a hard time.
