EZpass question part 2

Thanks to all who answered my last question - especially Sooboy whose answer was the most helpful with the link he posted.

We bought an EZpass in Gettysburg PA yesterday and I went online to register it.

Their website says it's only for vehicles up to 7,000 pounds. If you have something between 7,001 and 15,000 you need a commercial account, which would be no problem as we still have a corporation active that we could put it under.

Problem is we are driving a motor home - 39' - with a tow.

So are we not able to use the EZpass system? :h

Those of you who do use it in motor homes what do you do - use your car as the registered vehicle and hope they don't catch on or what?

The 72 hour clock is ticking on this thing to register it so I am hoping someone can help. (will try to call their help desk today but the thought of doing that gives me chills;):o

I did read it.

Did you read my post on this thread that I posted before yours? If you had you would see why we can't get an ipass from Illinois.

I didn't. I did now. My apologies.

Not sure if you looked up the address for where you have to go to to get the new transponder. It is a Harrisburg address but it is on the other side of Harrisburg. It will put you very close to Hershey, PA. You might want to look at things to see and do there while you are passing through on your way to Lancaster.

That is exactly our plan!

We are in Lancaster and were going to Hershey anyway and will take a short diversion to Derry St. in Harrisburg first thing tomorrow.

Might mean I can't eat so much chocolate as origonally planned though:W

From the PA E-ZPass frequently asked questions page.

Can I use my transponder in my RV?

If you have an RV, with a gross vehicle weight over 15,000 pounds, you will need to open a commercial account. If you have an RV that has a gross vehicle weight of 15,000 pounds or less, you may add it to your personal E-ZPass account. Please be prepared with your weight, tires and axles when calling to add an RV to your account. You may require a separate transponder programmed for the specific weight class of the RV.

I know what your going through. When we got our Class A in 2014, we stopped at The Delaware EZ Pass service center and they had no clue how to handle it, they sent us to main headquarters in Dover, They gave us the the top class for non commercial as it has RV tags and said this is what I should use. Never had a problem, and they adjust for the toad when it attached.

Ok - I bit the big one and called the customer service center. We have to go to Harrisburg and get a commercial transponder. Thankfully we will be heading to Lancaster tomorrow for 3 days so we will head to Harrisburg on one of those days.

I'm sure that we could have fudged it and registered the one I bought yesterday under our truck then tried to put it in the motor home but we really don't like taking chances on being pulled over for some violation. I have no idea what those might cost!

So the one we have goes back tomorrow and we have a bonus trip planned now.

I did check into the Illinois ezpass but again the issue is the waiting the 2 weeks to get it. We aren't stationary anywhere that long (which is a good thing!)

Thanks to all who answered. Hopefully this was a help to our fellow northwesterners who spoke up above.

Sorry about being late answering your question but i was on golf course yes I do tow a vehicle behind my motoehome. It registers as 4 axels and cost a couple of bucks more than if we were to run thru seperately but who wants to stop and unhock.....i just run thru the wide truck lane and the toll meter just turns green and i drive thru.

I also have the account set on automatic renewal and every time the balance gets down to $20 it increases by the amount I set which is $ 75 because I go over the Chesepeake bridge quite often

Maybe this will help---my EZ pass was issued by the PA Turnpike maybe 10 years ago, maybe more. At the time I lived in MD and they decided to charge a fee so I dropped the MD one and got the Turnpike one which at the time was free. I now live in NC and have used this pass all over the country without ever a problem. I transfer it from one vehicle to another often, cars, pick ups, motorhome. With both the trucks and the motorhome I often tow a 32ft enclosed car trailer w/3 axels so at times I have had 6 axels but usually 5 and used the EZ pass all over without a problem. I think the original registration was to one of our long gone cars. I don't ask questions and neither have they. Hope this helps.

I'm from the NW. Heading to NE next month. Just ordered an iPass from Illinois. Plan is to have just one iPass. This is all new to me so I find threads like this very helpful.

NY E-ZPass issued us two blue transponders for the NY Thruway motorhome plan, one just for the motorhome, and one for when we're towing the toad. Both tags are registered on our standard personal auto-refill account along with the tag for our toad. Our refill "trigger" amount is $25.

There's no charge or monthly charges for a NY issued E-ZPass if you set up an auto-refill account. And no commercial account needed for motorhomes either. If you use the NY Thruway much, applying for their motorhome plan can bring considerable savings. Do NOT get a pass from the NY-NJ Port Authority, since they follow the NJ rules for a monthly charge.

I have had an EZPass since the beginning when they came out. Actually, I have 9 EZPasses on the same account right now. If you go online and register the vehicles with the current license plates, you should have no issues.

I was told many years ago, keep the vehicle registered online on the account and when you pass through the tolls, they will manually "adjust" the class you are in when you cross the scales. In all the years, I have not had a problem.

I now use the same transponder in my '10 Revolution 43' with tag and pulling a large trailer at 14,000lbs and have had no issues. They have adjusted the class and I have been deducted the correct amount from my balance each time.

I also have a large toter home with a 44' trailer and use the same pass in that vehicle with no issues.

Unless you are a commercial over the road truck, they have told me that they do NOT want you using the blue EZPass transponders. Plus the balance you must carry on those blue transponders is absolutely crazy!!

And, you are right about the customer service people, they can be helpful at times, but they don't always have the correct information.

And yes, I have used the same pass in my motorhome in PA, MD, OH, IN, IL, NY, MA with out any issues.

Good Luck!!!
