In the Commonwealth of Massachusetts there in a big drive to have all motor vehicles carry an EZPass. I think the real reason is that with the new technology, they will be able to collect tolls on highways and bridges where they can not set up toll booths.When I sent in my application I got a call from the EZPass office concerning the 190 Roadtrek. In fact I got more than one call because they seemed to not know how to program the EZPass. One call wanted to know if the RV was dual wheels. When I tried to return the call, the person who answered didn't know the person who called me and that they were in another department. I still do not know what I will be charged for a toll until I put it on my RV and go through a toll booth, which I will be doing in a few weeks.I am posting this to put you all on alert. So far I have been charged the auto rate before this EZPass problem came up. I will report back as soon as I know what is going on. Hopefully it is "Much to do about nothing."

That is what they tell me. If you do not have an EZPass you will be billed based on license plat number for more than EZPass will charge. I still think the real reason is to collect tolls. In Massachusetts they have been trying to figure how to collect tolls from commuters from the South Shore. They collect from the North Shore through tolls on the Mystic River Bridge and the tunnels. West of Boston is Mass Pike.How else can you explain why a government is giving something for free?

It's coming to New Hampshire too... If you elect not to have one they'll just send you a bill in the mail, you don't have to pay it if you don't want to, just can't renew your license or reregistration, no big deal...My traveling companion refuses to get EZPass, on our trip to Niagara Falls he paid $47 more in tolls than me and I ended up having to wait at each toll for him. His reasoning is; EZPass can't be trusted with his CC#...

The last two writers from New Hampshire have finally talked about the point I made in my original post. How are the EZPass people setting the charges for our RV's? When I asked I did not get a clear answer. It seems they don't know. If we slack off and don't speak up, we all will be paying more tolls.

My second point has not been addressed by anybody, "Is this the beginning for governments to get additional taxes from the car and RV owners?" I think it is. Please reread my original post.

When doing research for a trip out to Niagara Falls, I read that New York state measures the height above the drive wheels. If you are over 7' you get charged the commercial rate. I assume that's why my traveling companion paid $27 more in tolls than I... He has a 25' fifth wheel and I have a 35' travel trailer. But then, I never saw anyone out there with a tape measure either.

I live in NH, bought my EZ Pass in NH and was told my Class B+ Born Free 22 ft MH is a different class from my passenger car. When I went through tolls using it on a trip to Gettysburg, PA, the toll booth registered a higher toll than friends I was caravanning with who were driving a huge Dodge with a truck camper and towing a trailer with a motor cycle. Kind of bummed me out!

But when I got my monthly statement, the actual charge was the same as my passenger car is charged! Go figure! I'm not complaining. Love the ease of the EZ Pass and in several places they have EZ Pass lanes that are at the same speed as the rest of the highway - love those!

The last Republican Governor here in Indiana leased the Indiana Toll Road in Northern Indiana to a Spanish/Australian consortium for 99 years. I'm about as far from there as it is possible to be and that suits me just fine. People wonder why I think of myself as Conservative but I won't have anything to do with the Republicans.

We travel frequently in the States and were pleased that as Canadians, we could get a New York State EZ-Pass for our Roadtrek 190. It's worked without a flaw.

Contrast it to the rip-off we have here in Ontario, the privately owned Highway 407 ETR (Electronic Toll Route). There are no toll booths, and if you don't have a transponder (we don't), they take a picture of your plate and you'll get an exorbitant bill in the mail, even if you don't live in Ontario. yep, I bought one that had a strip of fresnel lens, or something across the middle of it so that you had to be looking straight at it to read it, supposedly an elevated traffic camera wouldn't get the number. I also got a spray can of paint which was a reflective material to spray on plate which supposedly kept units that worked with a flash gun to not be able to see the numbers.
then I just started driving legally. :s

Indiana, as well as some other states forbid ANYTHING covering the renewal stickers on plates. The plate has to be exposed to the eye. A lot of times the police turn a blind eye to it. A lot of older people would get their plate in a plastic envelope and run the mounting screws through it so you'd see a faded plastic cover. Be a smart mouthed kid though and watch how heavy they can come down.

I don't mind paying tolls as if I use a road, I'll pay my fair share. I wonder if I can complain to the Federal Trade Commission as the moeny we have says "legal tender for all debts, private and public". I use plastic as little as possible and plan to avoid places with mandatory electronic devices. One shop across the Wabash river from me has closed up as most of the customers don't want to get an electronic pass system and it's too mich trouble to go around.

You can buy an EZ-pass from any state that issues EZ-pass. In NYS there are two authorities that sell EZ-pass and one has a monthly fee just to have the pass and the other doesn't. Shop your EZ-pass around the states that issue it. And you will also find that some ask a lot less questions than others. When we got our B we transferred the pass from a passenger van to the B and notified EZ-Pass - no problem. Many tollbooths have a weight scale that you drive over that also counts the axles. Where there is a higher toll for a heavier vehicle you will be charged that rate on your EZ-Pass. We find that this happens on some roads and not others. And within state the savings with the EZ-Pass are considerable over paying cash.
