Flooring soft spot Jayco class C 24 foot YSLP

We bought this used and are pretty convinced that the soft spot in the floor corresponds with the LACK of metal bracing (every four feet underneath). We bought vinyl plank flooring to put down and hubby had planned to reinforce the floor. But access to reinforce that area underneath is pretty much prohibited by the gas tank. A sheet of vinyl flooring (which I have no problem with using) is probably the easiest fix without opening a whole can of worms and leave floor support (or lack of like it is).

Make a tyvex pattern which I don't mind doing and then cut the vinyl a bit bigger and then work it, float it and put trim around the edges with trim attached to the walls and floor floating under.

Does this sound like a plan? This is an rv that we use a lot and by the time we are done with it it will have a lot of miles and love on it.

  • the soft floor might be from a roof leak or plumbing leak above the floor or below IMHO
  • Your plan seems like its the easiest way to make the repair for the floor but investigate the cause.
Floor support is possible I guess but...…

Most rv floors are solid enough to support people w/o feeling soft due to lack of support, even with age.
Is the soft floor near the entrance door ? That's a very common place for water to intrude and travel before it settles in a low point .
RV doors with glass are prone to leaks, water runs down inside the door then seeps under the layers of flooring at the sill plate.
Correct fix is take the door apart and seal the glass but some people including myself just seal the edge of the glass where it meets the frame. I do that on every new rv I buy.
  • It really does correspond with the middle of the 4 foot span of no metal bracing underneath. AND it could be that it was a seam in the plywood underneath as well in that location. BUT we are not digging to find out...don't want this to be a major project and really don't feel it is leaks.

It is not by the door so that is not it. We have removed the vinyl flooring and the carpet....no sign of water seepage, leaks.

  • if it were me I would be finding out why that floor is soft even if it means taking the floor up in that area.. it could be a structure failure and that could be dangerous.IMHO
