thanks

As far as I know all Ford E 350 and 450 and up have rear parking brakes, they have a disk and a drum all in one with the parking brake actuating the the shoes.

I believe the the Chevrolet or Work Horse have the drive shaft parking brake.
They are scary, if a "U-joint" brakes completely there is no parking brake at all.

I have a 2001 Ford E 350 V-10 with front and rear disk brakes and rear shoes for the parking brake, that in an emergency I can use to stop the RV.

I have the overdrive rather than the towing, the v-10 engine has more power than what I need to pull the toad.

the 07 E450 my LD is built on uses a transmission parking brake. I agree the 08 if you can find it is the way to go. There were a lot of improvements.

  • Actually the Ford 5R110W Torqshift transmission uses only 5 speeds in any given environment, but does have a gear that is used only in an alternate 5 speed shift pattern when temperatures are below zero or something like that.
So it has 6 gears internally, but only 5 are used at any given time. In Class C usage above zero, you'll only ever see the same 5 gears.
  • I have a 2005 Itasca Class C that I bought new in early 2006. The Ford E450 chassis under it was built in late 2004

I have the 5-speed (6 speeds internally) Torqshift transmission with Tow/Haul mode and it has been fantastic. This transmission applies the brakes automatically going downhill whenever you're in Tow/Haul mode and applies the brakes automatically going downhill whenever the cruise control is ON so as to not exceed your set speed - whether in Tow/Haul mode or not. Cruise control can be used out of Tow/Haul mode or in Tow/Haul mode.

It's an amazing transmission teamed up with the V10 - definitely get a late enough RV model to have this combination.

And, if you can get into a 2008 or later E-Series you get bigger brakes (significantly bigger in front, somewhat bigger and easier to service in the rear). Also more front axle capacity featuring a new radius arm design, plus you get rid of the noxious transmission-mounted Parking Brake.
  • Alright, good info. I will look for tow/haul. As some of you said a 2006 MH could be a 2005 chssis.
  • I believe that late 2005 chassis (probably a 2006 Motorhome) and the 2006 chassis (2007 motorhome) should have the new transmission. If it says tow/haul then its the new tranny. Love that new TorqueShift transmission.
  • 2005 model year chassis.

Note: many 2005 motorhomes will be built on a 2004 chassis. You can run the Ford VIN to verify, or look at the shifter. "O/D OFF" s-speed, and "Tow/Haul" is for the TorqueShift. At least for the V10. Ford made it confusing by retaining the O/D button in the diesels.
