Gas leak on Generator

I have a gas leak in my generator. I had to take the air filter "holder" for lack of not knowing what's called to get to the part. I tried to tighten it up. Just don't know where to get these parts at. Any help would be appreciated.

In the pic you'll see where I tried to tighten it up. That's where the gas is coming from. Thanks again.

That filter was one of a defective batch made by Onan and it is leaking around the seams. Onan does not make that filter anymore. They make an adapter to take the place of the filter. Buy the adapter and removd the hose off of the filter and then remove/unscrew the old filter and screw in the adapter, slip the hose back on and you should be good to go. There is a second filter screwed into the fuel pump and it should be replaced with the new style filter. I will give you a link to the adapter and the new filter part number as soon as I find it. So in essence you end up with only one filter instead of two. I had the same leaking problem and I used the adapter.
Onan adapter
The old discontinued filter was Part number 0149-2629, The New replacement filter is part number 0149-2341-01. Here is the link
New Onan filter

I would try Channel lock pliers to remove/unscrew the old filter

Thanks for all the replies. I did find the exact one online and bought it through Sears (RVPlus ships it).. then I followed the link to the Cummins store and found it there for about 7 dollars cheaper. Oh well. It's on the way.

Thanks for the walk through on how to do it. Much appreciated.

......cummins is diesel.

The one pictured sure looks like it's attached to a gasoline fuel bowl for a carburetor...diesel has injectors... plus Cummins makes Onan and Onan has gasoline generators too... and the OP said he had a "gas" leak... just sayin.... 😉

Cross reference to a NAPA filter. I believe it is a filter used on older model Fords.

I just had the same issue as you.

Onan no longer makes that filter. They have replaced it with an extension.

Part # 149-2341-01 (Filter located at generator fuel pump)
Part # A029S253 (Extension)

I bought my parts at http://www.cumminsonanstore.com/

Good luck and hope this helps.

That is a after market gas filter, cummins is diesel. You will need to cut the
clamp and get a screw type clamp. I guess you could use that style for diesel to.

Haven't ordered from this site, but it appears to be a pretty complete parts house for Onan generators. http://www.partsfortechs.com/asapcart/generator-parts-onan-c-14_104.html

I'd put on a new filter. Go to your local hardware store and get a roll of teflon plumbing tape and a small worm clamp to fit your fuel line. There may be a version of teflon tape specifically made for petroleum products....if so, then get that one. As for the fuel line on the bottom of the filter, you'll have to remove the existing hose clamp...the little silver thing around the fuel line (you'll have to destroy the one on it and replace it with the right sized worm clamp) and then with some gentle force, you can pull the hose off the bottom of the filter....wiggle it back and forth as you pull downward. Be prepared to have some gasoline spill out...get a pan under it and wear some eye protection in case it sprays a little from being slightly under pressure. Then, use a wrench to unscrew the filter where you had tried a pair of pliers to tighten it. Take the new filter, observing the arrows for fuel flow if they exist, and on the screw threads (NOT the side that the fuel line goes on), wrap a couple of rounds of the teflon tape around the threads, making sure not to get any of the tape over the opening and then screw it up into the fitting on the carburetor. Get it hand tight first and then use the wrench. When the filter feels like it's on tight enough (resist the urge to OVER-tighten it as you might crack the fitting), slip the new worm clamp over the fuel line, reconnect the fuel line to the bottom of the filter making sure it goes all the way up snug with the bottom of the filter, and tighten the worm clamp over the flange. Crank the generator and enjoy camping!!

Now wasn't that easy??? 😉 Actually, it's a lot easier than it sounds when you actually type it out... LOL!

Good Luck!!

Nice photography, by the way!! 😉

Just talked to a cummins dealer a few miles from my home, and they said they don't even use that fuel filter anymore, they just take it out and put an extension in. Any ideas on which way I should go? Keep the filter, which I think I could do myself, or take it out and put in an extension, which I don't have any clue on how to do. Thanks.

Next dumb question. I found a few fuel filters online for my model number. They don't look like the one that's in it. Will that make a difference? Also, where the hose below that hooks in will the old one just pop out and the new one pop in? If not how do I undo the old one? As you can tell I'm not mechanically inclined! LOL Thanks for any and all help.

It looks like the fuel filter is leaking and it could be that you just need some thread sealer on it. Might be time to change it while you are at it.
