general onan generarator question.

I'm about to service my generator for the first time. Oil filter, spark plugs, air filter, oil change. Are these items usually able to be found at auto parts stores. Or is there another place to get onan service parts?

Mine is an 09 propane gen.
  • Actually I found the filter on amazon for a decent price. Now I'm trying to find the oil capacity. It's no where in the manual. I've got the Microquiet 3600lp.
  • if you woulld post onan model and spec number, i could probably
answer your question, even give you aftermarket part numbers for
your filters if available. certified Onan tech 30 years
  • I changed air filter, plugs, and oil filter on my much older (1982/3) gas Onan Generator. Exact matches obtained at NAPA Auto. Plugs and oil filter were in stock at the store, but I had to wait two days for the air filter to come from the warehouse.
  • We have a local Cummins outfit which of course has all the parts required but have found that our local Camping World carried them as well. As noted above they are readily available online and at better prices.
  • Not all parts, but most. You can find the parts that are not at the auto parts store on Ebay or Amazon. They'll be cheapest on Ebay.
  • The typical Onan 4KY series of generators doesn't have an oil filter if memory serves. I don't know about other Onan models; they may well differ.

The filters, and possibly the spark plug, are not likely to be in stock at an auto parts store. The air filter may be a reusable foam element; check before going out to buy a new one. There's probably no reason to change the spark plug unless it's had many, many hours of operation, in which case the oil change is long overdue. Particularly on a propane powered engine, the spark plug should last quite a long time.

Jack's Small Engines is a decent place to get parts for all sorts of small engines.
