Generator Help

Your description of the heat and associated fan not cooling the converter WFCO 55 amp is an indication the converter is at fault. Just replaced one in another unit which has been acting up for 2 months...worked some times, died with a load, in this case knocked out shore power and unit went on batteries.

3 or 4 lights should kick the fan on and stay on.

I doubt shore power would be good. Load it up and listen to your low voltage beeps and whistles. The battery may soon be discharged.

Just my thoughts after replacing a wfco 55 amp in a 5th wheel with option generator.

You didn't mention the year of the gen, or I just missed it. It may be the fuel filter to the gen is plugged after running for a while, and after it sets the material allows fuel to reach the gen. Not getting enough fuel will cause the 12 code to appear, as the engine will not respond to the need for more power. Or, the fuel pump is getting weak, or you have a leak in the rubber hose that is used in the fuel supply from the tank to the gen. You could try rigging a temp fuel supply from a gas can, with new hose to the supply side of the fuel pump to see if their is any difference.

The first question I would ask myself:
Does everything work well on shore power,including the converter. If it does then you are looking at the Onan, and possible regulator

Check the coolant as low radiator coolant will cause it to shut down as soon as it's loaded. Use the instruction book. Mine did it and it was that easy to fix.

The code if I am reading it correctly is Blink Pause Blink Blink, so a 12?
I have a Onan HGJAB 5.5 Kw. Code 12 is listed as an overvoltage fault. (controller unable to maintain rated voltage) Corrective Action: See an Authorized Onan DEaler.
I am confused why this does not happen sooner. I can load the heck out of it and get nothing until 1/2 hour into running the unit. My only thought is that the battery charger kicks in after a bit and that is a heavy load?

There is no rhyme or reason as to one thing or the other that trips the genny out after 1/2 hour. I've tried it with everything in 12v panel unplugged and all breaker off and still get same result. Until the next day when everything as cooled down and it all works again for 1/2 hour.

I don't think it's the converter or any one thing in particular and especially with nothing actually tripping or blowing fuses and especially when on shore power. I'm thinking controller or voltage regulator or varnish breakdown in the windings, creating some sort of an overload. With this one, I'd try tech support from the manufacture before taking it in somewhere.

Are you not getting on the codes? If so, what are they?
