Generec generator

Need some advice on my friends Generec generator. It is on a TourMaster Gulf Stream coach 2007. They already changed mother board, fuel filter and the engine will not fire up. What could the problem be? The engine tries to fire up, but then it stops. Owner was telling me that it runs as long as he has the start button pressed down. As soon as he releases it, it will stop.
  • The most common reason for that condition is the generator not providing 120v AC to the control board. It must see 120v AC power being produced to continue running when the start button is released. Dirty slip rings can cause that. Otherwise it is likely a failed control board.

  • Just happened to note the following on the main forum web site under RV Generator troubleshooting tips

"Generator starts, then fails to run: Low oil level or low oil pressure, Low fuel supply, press the prime switch the recommend length of time, sticky choke linkage, or check the generator AC voltage output. Other voltage tests require an Operating Manual, Troubleshooting charts and learned personnel."

I've heard of others having problems with faulty sensors as well, so even if your oil is up, the sensor doesn't see it.

  • Ray, I am afraid the list is long... Something, either on the engine side or the generator side is not setting the right conditions to allow the generator to run.

On the engine side the generator has to sense oil pressure or it will not latch the relay that controls fuel I think there are other conditions but the oil pressure sensor would be my lead candidate... On the generator side Frequency, voltage needs to be within normal operational parameters or latch relays that allow the engine to run will not be set.. Could be as simple as the brushes or brush block failure. Or the stator has failed.
