getting hd tv in woods

We don't bring along our SAT DISH stuff anymore with us. Have pretty good luck using the NATL BROADCAST network using the BATWING OTA antenna setup. Don't know if you have tried this yet or not... You have to switch to ANTENNA and scan in the usable digital HDTV channels before you can view them.

If this doesn't work for us then the only other way is to use the internet to downstream TV over the internet. Our present internet is VERIZON MIFI which is only a 3GB dataplan and downstreaming TV programs will eat that up pretty quick. We use a free to use program on-line called 'WATCH TV-SERIES' which is not "live" TV shows but as soon as the TV program is shown over the air it is made up into a video you can downstream to view it. Works good for us...

If you are going to be doing this alot you will need to go with the MILLENICOM MIFI service which uses the good VERIZON network and this will give you a good 20GB DATAPLAN to use.

I am not a big fan using WIFI signals from non-secure locations. I use my internet for checking emails, chatting with the kids, paying bills, an surfing the internet. I like to stay on the SECURE SIDE of things as much as I can...

Not many ways to get TV when you are way back in the woods sometimes. I was surprised how the new NATL BROADCAST did for us. It does take good pointing of the antenna to the local TV towns to work however... It is FREE to use too...

We always carry a bunch DVD movies just for these times haha...

But I have unlimited data plan.

Data is the problem. To much to watch and not enough data to watch it!
While you should be able to get by with a high data plan like Millenicom, it's pretty pricy considering you won't need that much all year long. OTA TV is a good option if that option is available where you camp. Campground WiFi will generally be too slow / flaky or block streaming video so this is usually a bad option as well.

Why not simply purchase a portable dish and enough coax cable to connect your satellite equipment?

I've got about 250 feet - and sometimes that isn't enough to get a clear signal. At some CG it is simply not possible to get a satellite signal unless you can put an antenna higher than the trees.

I'm not a big fan of watching TV series - but have found that DVD sets of a good series are great for a week or two at a location without live or satellite TV. Without other distractions, we can really watch the series and catch stuff we miss otherwise.

Go camping in the high desert. Not as many trees there.

What about putting the dish on the roof? I would use that time and go fishing

We too use Slingbox as it works great.... It is the data that will cost you in the long run ...Like stated above , it's better to have an unlimited plan

To answer the HD question.. While you MAY get a 16x9 picture off of your Slingbox, Hulu, etc., it is highly doubtful you will ever see anything close to 1080 HD. SD yes, HD, No.

As mentioned, try a portable satellite antenna, or see what you can see on the off air antenna on the roof.

You've got my interest. Our rooftop sat will not as previously stated receive under trees. It also will not receive local channels as it is an extension of our home system.

Tell me all the good bad and ugly of the National and SLingbox? Say I'm in the woods of NC and would want to watch the 6pm news of my home local channels. Is that a possibility of these services? How do these services deal with scrambled programs? Please tell me all and in plain language please. I do not understand nor do I wish to learn the jargon or complexities of the systems. I am interested in what I get to watch and how?
