Glass surface cooktop Induction style

We drycamp about 95% of the time with a dc fridge, microwave and mag induction burner just fine. No gennie, solar or installed propane necessary.

The alternator supplies the ah's while on the road.

Capturing enough of those with a large enough house bank is one key to a practical electric kitchen. (Ours is 420 ah)

Periodic recharging is a second key. We use the micro and mag unit freely on the road since something like 100 amps is available after we pull out of a rest stop. We use those more sparingly in camp and get about four days to 50% SOC before wanting more road miles. Even a short grocery run quickly adds a day or two of ah's. Others could extend their stay or electricity consumption with solar or gennie use.

Conservation is a third key. We use a propane bbq tank outside for grill, camp stove and heating hot water. We can't do much about the dc fridge consuming 2/3 of our daily ah's in camp but we can choose how much micro and mag we use. The micro typically runs for a few minutes. Mag units excel at simmering so that adds considerable kitchen utility at 10-20% of their full-power draw.

Always great to minimize heat sources in hot weather. The induction unit transfers around 70% of the btus into the pot compared to about half that for propane. Cooking outside works even better for both. An inexpensive portable mag unit is compact and happy to sit next to the campstove if that is useful.

Our mag unit use typically requires less than 20 ah/day as a supplemental camp burner. Road use requires no budgeting at all.

I guess some of you don't dry camp much because my figures show that running an induction/solid surface cooktop off of an inverter for just one hour while on a dry camping weekend could draw 130 amps from your batteries. I will stay with my propane stove and propane powered fridge.

We also have a portable single induction burner. You do not have the clean up problem as a solid surface electric cooktop as a poster mentioned. The top does not heat up, just the pans themselves. All of my induction cookware works from the small 1 qt. pan to the 12" fry pan.

I use it in the house as well as the B but would not give up the propane burners for when we dry camp. Our's sits right on top of the burner cover. Very convenient and really cuts down on the heat buildup that the burners put out.

They also have the portable ones at Costco. I was also thinking of getting one and using it as H345 uses it.

I like the portable induction units , as I like to cook outdoors on the picnic table . I also use a separate power cord from the pedestal to power my cookware rather than the RV circuit .

One drawback of an induction cooktop is that you need certain types of pots for it to work. They must be made of magnetic capable metals - so no aluminum, copper or glass pots will work. Also pots that are very small or large do not always work well. So with the cooktop you need to get new pots if you don't already have the type that will work on it.

Several years ago we replaced out range in the S&B with a range with a solid surface cook top. That will never happen again! Than mutt is a PITA to clean and looks dirty minutes after cleaning. The only positive is the hot surface indicator. If replaced again, it will be with a gas range including a gas oven.
