Gurgling sound in propane tank

I went out and cranked up my furnace today. This is the first time since I bought it at the dealership. The furnace works great. I went outside to check something in a bay on the driver side and heard a slight gurgling sound. I located it and it's coming from the propane tank. What would cause a propane tank to gurgle? I've never heard any sounds coming from one, in use or not.
  • I noticed a gurgling sound coming from our propane tanks a couple of years ago. I asked about it and didn't get any responses. I have not heard it since and we have used the heater.
  • Remember that you have a cylinder full of liquid propane, under pressure so that it stays a liquid. Your rig uses vaporous propane. The process involves the liquid boiling off into a vapor. If usage is fast enough, it's a vigorous boil, and you may hear it boiling.

Boiling is the process of going from liquid to vapor. It happens at a much lower temperature than it does with, e.g., water (and in all cases it depends on ambient pressure).

  • Good info. I've never heard a propane tank gurgle either.
  • OK, thanks. I knew it would pull more propane than anything else. I've just never heard any sound from one before.

Thanks for the info I wasn't aware of that.

  • That means the furnace is pulling propane FAST from the tank. Normal
