hook to shore power

Is it ok to stay hookup to shore power during winter? Will it cause problems with the Batt or not? Also when hook to shore power there is a buzz under the bed. I assume itis the inverter or converter. I may have both, I dont know. 2001 28' Jayco Eagle V10. I hook up so I can run a heater inside during cold nights. Oh just got back from vaction 2500 miles round trip to Alabama. That V10 is a hoss. 8-9 mpg.
  • I guess some converters are better than others. I have had them cook batteries in the past, so I prefer to not leave the coach plugged in and use a trickle charger on the batteries instead. Of course, it doesn't freeze where I am....
  • If you have a smart converter you will be ok. Check your battery fluid level occasionally. A single stage converter, such as the Magnetek or Parallax 6300 or 7300 series will boil your battery so you will have to check the fluid level often. I use a Battery Minder plus during the winter instead of the converter. Never have a heater running unless I am exercising the generator. I've winterized of course.
  • I have mine plugged into a timer that goes on 2 hrs. a day, My smart charger charges the house batteries and the Battery Minder charges the engine battery. Been doing this since 2002 and never had any problems!

The easy way out is leave the coach plugged in but turn the battery switch off so it's not charging from the converter. Now plug in a good battery maintainer that is designed to be left attached to the battery (you can put one on the chassis battery too) and plug them in you can use the RV outlets if you want). Now you will have proper battery maintenance and if the AC power fails you won't drain the battery either from parasitic loads.
  • Just a little off subject. J didn't know anybody lived in Clovis thought most people just drove through town. I'm a retired truck driver.
  • I leave my MH plugged into shore power during the winter. Keep a dehumidifier running and a small heater to keep the interior above freezing.

On my unit.....if I am plugged into shore power the AC over rides the battery disconnect and the converter is always running. Because of this I upgraded to a smart multi stage converter that protects the batteries.

I also unplug the propane alarm. Don't need to run it if the propane is not on.
  • When I had a Magnetek/Parallax 7345, the answer was no. Now that I have a Progressive Dynamics 4655V the answer is yes.

    It depends on your converter.
