Houston/ Harvey

Just thinking about the mess in Houston with Hurricane Harvey and wondering how members such as Brett Wolfe who lives between Houston and Galveston are faring. I hope they were out of the area and are safe, but it would be nice to hear how they and their stick and brick house made out. I am sure there are others in Greater Houston, too, and I hope they did well also.

I'm also wondering how PPL is doing, too. Their website says they will be open Wednesday but somehow I think that might be optimistic. And does anybody have a rig on consignment there? Did they move the stock out and how did your rig do? Will insurance cover your losses? Should we be expecting a bunch of flooded coaches on the market this fall? Disclosed or not?

Later,

Jim
  • I understand Wolf and Company are not in Houston right now.
  • Dont worry about PPL a lot of those rigs were already water damaged.
  • I've got a friend that owns an RV rental business and she has donated a large portion of her fleet to victims. Driving F350 to Houston tomorrow with RV TT in tow to help.
From east Austin to way west of Houston is a mess.
  • Well, Dianne and I WERE (as in past tense) high (8,450') and dry in Angel Fire, NM for the last month.

Drove home, arriving yesterday (first day the freeways were open through Houston) to check on the house. All OK-- no water got in ours. Since we are only a 5 minute bike ride from salt water, we have a pretty good drainage area (Galveston bay/Gulf of Mexico).

Will be spending a couple of days cleaning up debris in the yard-- guess I need the exercise anyway.

BTW, I 10 is still closed east of Houston.
  • There are going to be a lot of vehicles, including RV's, trucks, and automobiles, that are going to be hitting the market soon. From experience with our Jaguar that was totaled for us, and repaired by the dealer, it can take two months or more for Carfax to report a vehicle as having extensive damage.
Don't fall for a good price without doing a thorough inspection for water damage.
By the same token, this may make it easier to find some difficult to find parts like an RV basement door, and maybe some other body panels, at the salvage yards.

By the way. Some folks are asking for this or that or the other thing for the folks in Houston but if you are going to donate via established charities like the Salvation Army or the Catholic Church or The Red Cross. Consider case.

WHY.. Well you might be able to find a deal on bed sheets especially at place like Big Lots. But when they pull up with and Empty Semi and say "Fill 'er up" You better believe they can make that dollar stretch so far that quarters are thinner than dimes Easily doubling what you can buy with the same cash.
