Houston to Palm Springs & I 10 road grades?

Livingthedream1

Traveling from Houston west on I 10 to Palm Springs in a 2006 Pace Arrow with toad. Thinking I may have a fan clutch issue and dont have the luxury of time to wait to have it checked out. Seems that as long as we are on the highway, the engine temp is normal, but when we get into stand still traffic the engine runs hot. Thinking we can make it all the way to Palm Springs if the road grades aren't bad and we can avoid heavy traffic. Can anyone tell us what kind of grades to expect.

So once again, I was giving sample of misleading info on the linked site using I-15 sample that I know very well.
That was side observation at the time, but "it happen" to lot of drivers planning similar route that they figure out the detour to Las Vegas is not such a bad thing, so I would not be surprised if the 2 ways the topic diverted will merge.
If the routing is misleading on I-15 it is very likely to be misleading on I-10 anyway.

The OP is going down the I-10.... are you drinking?

Take the bypass south of Phoenix by taking 8 and then cutting across. I can't remember the number but it is marked and a great road. Saves time and hassle of Phoenix. I don't recall any real grade issues.

I believe that is 85 from Gila Bend and yes it's a great bypass. For that matter you can take 8 all the way to Yuma and cut up to Quartzsite. These will add miles but is an easy drive.
I would go I8 to El Centro then head north on the 111 to the 78 to the 86 into Indio. This would also avoid the grade between Blythe and Indio on the I10

I-15 Mountain Pass is having 4700' elevation.
Obviously the 4.+% is quoted Caltrans warning sign and the % is not consistent on whole 30 miles grade.
Still the point is that with all those burned holes on the side of the road smart driver would scratch his head before going there with defective cooling system.
That applies to the site showing it as easy grade and does not have to apply to OP route.

He should be on I-10, not 15. I-10 never gets above 3500' look up the elevations of the cities they will go thru.

You have to trust me that 30 miles of 4.9% grade is real vehicle killer.
Especially in areas where 110F is not that rare.

We've been across this route many times over the years, and do not recall any climbs that are 5% for 30 miles. plus this time of year the temp in El-Paso right now is now 43, and freezing at night.

Should be an easy do.

Do the math, 5% grade for 30 miles takes you up over 8000' and the route never gets that high across the three states.

If you're going to chance it, remember you can always turn the heat on full, and run the fan on high. That should buy you some cooling.

Safe travels.

Yes, I'm bad, but I need to post it. Livingthedream, and reality are seldom the same. Welcome to the road.

110F in January? That would be a record and more proof of global warming than anything to date.

Good One NMace:
Perfect example of posters who do not read OP request. OP only asked for grade information.

Where did you find the site option for month insertion?
This topic with the link will not be deleted in February, so other drivers will read it year around.
Some thinking please?
