How can I tell if rv roof is EPDM or TPO

I have a 1995 Ford Four Winds Cutaway and I can't for the life of me figure out what type of rubber is on the roof. I want to use the liquid rubber but I need to know if I need the primer or not. Can anyone help? I'm a new RVer :)
  • TPO is very smooth when clean almost glass like smooth. EPDM has a slight to moderate texture. TPO has like a vinyl surface bonded to the rubber. Randu
  • check out the dicor web site, they have a video on how to tell.
    bumpy
  • It is easy to tell the difference with BOTH at hand to compare but individually, not so easy. EPDM is usually tighter when sliding an object across it while Vinyl does not drag as much when sliding the same object. If you can feel it easily dragging on your finger when you push it across it is likely Rubber.
  • EPDM has a black side and a white side. TPO has 2 white sides.
Best way to tell is to remove the trim around the outside vent, from the inside. Remove a staple and look.

    Hope this helps
  • I finally got a hold of Four Winds and they said if it's before 2001 then it's EPDM. I'm so glad it's not TPO. I won't have to get primer. Thank you so much for all the answers and help :)
