How many hours a day do you drive?

Ive seen many people ask "how many miles do you think I can drive per day" and the answers are all over the place for a verity of reasons. So lets ask it a little differently:

When you travel with your Class A, about how many hours a day do you like to drive?

I drive 4 to 5 hours a day when driving from Port Orchard, Washington State to Lake Havasu City, AZ. and back. I try to really enjoy my driving time, I don't speed, stop when I want!

Usually no more than 8.
4 whopping cylinders on Toyota RV's. Talk about great getting good MPG. Also I have a very light foot on the pedal. I followed some MPG advice on Livingpress.com and I now get 22 MPG! Not bad for a home on wheels.

Sweet spot for our DP is 60-62 mph. For estimating I plan on 300-350 miles per day. six to eight hours driving a day. average for planning is fifty miles traveled per hour.

Busskipper, last summer we left at 7PM and stopped at a Cracker Barrel north of Nashville. Woke up at 6AM and hit the road before they open saving $20 on breakfast. North of K city a friend called asking if I knew I-29 was closed at Sioux City...NO! We had planned on taking US 2 across to Glacier because we had never been in that part of the mid west. Decided to go to the Tetons instead as they were routing traffic to the east around the flooding. The next afternoon we were in the Tetons... a lot more than 1500 miles. Going west I buy fuel every 400 miles as the price increases as you go west and it lets me stretch my legs . Going east I will go 800 miles on a tank and yes I love Gas Buddy as it's easy to save 12-15 cents using it over going to FlyJ.

I realize this is not for most, especially as we get older so there is not one size fits all. Even though we are semi retired, it's still the destination for us. If I get sleepy I'll pull over and let the DW drive for a couple hours while I take a nap. She has decided there are only two good ways to see Kansas... at night or from 30,000'. Safe travels to all.

Well lighten up on Kansas......this is the second time in one thread you bagged on the midwest.

The days of driving 700 miles a day are over for me. No more than 500 miles with stopping for a break every 175-200 miles.:)

DW drives about 4 hours a day normally no more than 225 miles, while I navigate and we stay two night at our stopping point. Today it was 79 miles, with a stop at some outlet stores. Tomorrow is just 26 miles with a stay of two nights visiting friends. That said yesterday was 381 miles due to a lack of Big Rig campgrounds along our route from Charlottesville VA to Chillicothe OH. Glad to have the Ross County Fair Grounds as a back up.

I have done as much as 900 miles a day in my '84 Trans-Am back in the late 80's when I was traveling from Bremerton to Storm Lake Ia to see my son at college, but that wasn't a lot of fun. It is amzing though as to how many places I was actually stop and see and spend some time at.
We then moved into different trailers and the last one was a32' Cougar TT pulled with an '01 PSD Excursion and I found that I could really rip off the miles in that rig. Now with the 40' MH, I tend to get out later and stop later. Of course,I looka at the folks that drive for 10-14 hours a day,or say they do, and wonder why there aren't more of them having accidents.
By law !!!!!, I couldn't drive my school bus more than 10 hours straight or ten hours in a 14 hour day. It is amazing that my 40' Thomas handled better on the highway on field trips than almost any MH I have ever driven.

Long time ago I read on here about the 300/3 rule. Fits our time. Good for the dogs, blood clots, and tempers. That's 300 miles or 3pm, which ever comes first. That means 5-6 hrs driving time. Understand the need for some to do more but choose not to.

No offence to the middle states as they keep the left coast further away BUT there is not anything I want to see in that area again... OK, maybe Branson. SO I'll do the 1500 miles to CO in in 48 hours. Often it's mid afternoon before we can get away so I'll put in 300+ miles or until tired then put in a full day of 800, sleep again and then be there by late afternoon. If I needed to do another 700 it would not be a problem as I love driving this MH that much. Once there my personal best is 4 miles in a day.

Ivy, there are only a few people on the forum who consistently give an answer that sounds like mine - you are one of them. I like you, always like to get the jump on a long drive with the 300+ drive in the evening - spending the night in one of My favorite Wall*Mart's the next is usually about 650 another 550-600 will get me within about 150-200 of Golden (My drive is between 1700 and 1750) I love to drive also but 12 hours is about my limit in one seat. The years have taken their toll, and for some reason the Flex-Steal is not nearly as comfortable as the Lexus even with the massage running. Once in Colorado the distances are all pretty short. Shortest one day drive and reset-up is the 6 miles between Golden and JeffCo.

Boy I miss Colorado.

Well Magilla,

You now have lots of answers. They are all correct and none of them matter.

The quickest way I know to end up dead is to push your capability. The old line "A man has got to know his limitations." is more than just a movie line, it is a warning to be headed.

What really matters is how comfortable is the driver(s). If you have a good navigator(s), this can take a lot of stress off the driver. Do things right and you can go amazing distances.

We have a very comfortable coach and a two driver crew. We have even been known to sleep one or two in the back while the others run the show. We have two limits that are unforgiving. The fuel tanks and the dog's need for a "gas stop".
