On FB, I lurk before I join, same with different forums. I once joined a FB open 'recommended group'. It was fun for a while looking at all the unique & interesting VW bus / split / Westy / Kombi's pics from all over the world, but the amount of daily, even hourly postings soon overwhelmed my newsfeed and opted out of the group. Too much noise!
You don't have to un-join. You can turn the postings off but still be a member, so you can check in periodically and see if there is anything interesting.
