Installing an Extend-A-Stay Propane

I have a 2008 Fleetwood Expedition and am looking at adding an external propane tank. My onboard propane tank is in the middle of the motorhome, and the only way to access it is by crawling under the RV. I ordered an extend-a-stay kit for adding an external tank, but my setup doesn't look anything like what I see on the youtube videos for hooking it up. Here is a picture of my setup. I know the shutoff is just a switch on the outside where I fill up the main tank unlike the handle as seen in most of the tutorial videos. Anyone have any thoughts or tips on how to set it up.
The second link is the extend-a-stay connection I ordered.

your set up should be a standard horizontal rv lp tank with a remote fill and bleeder valve. there should be no problem filling it like any other rv mounted tank. the reason they do not want to install the extend-a-stay is it is a temporary connection that has to be disconnected and capped off when ever you move and that's not easy when you have to crawl under the rig its more a safety consideration than any thing else. they want no liability with your setup.

I agree about the liability issue, but if that is in fact the reason, then why don’t they just say that, Instead of giving some lame excuse.

  • Update to my situation. I went to a commercial propane dealer where I lived who said they can install extend-a-stay adapters and they were baffled by my setup. Talked to the mechanic and he said there was no way he could install it for me. They even even said if I wanted a permanent external tank like many of my neighbors they couldn't do it. They won't even fill my onboard tank if they are already at the RV park filling someone else's external tank. They said it was something to do with the pressure on their 100 gallon tanks is different than my 20 gallon, which I think could be BS because I've been at many parks who have propane trucks come weekly to fill onboard tanks. I called a mobile tech and he is going to come take a look for me. Hopefully he can figure it out. I really don't feel like packing up every three weeks to fill up my propane.

Thanks for the advice everyone. I called a local propane dealer and if I go in and fill up my propane they will install the adapter for me for a small fee. I feel more comfortable doing that than risking installing in wrong and having a potential issue.

Good news and smart decision. Our rigs are similar. My tech ran a hose with a quick connect into a compartment. I then connect the tank there. Sure nice to not have to move.

  • My mobile tech did mine where I park. My tank is in the middle too. Didn't take him long.
  • Take your rig down to commercial propane dealer - they should be able to install for nominal charge.
  • You will need to do some repiping......

Shutoff solenoid ---then the 'Tee Adapter'------then connected back up to inlet side of LP Regulator

LP Hose from 'Tee Adapter' to side of MH (same place as Shutoff Switch and Remote Fill would be spot) so you can connect another hose with quick connectors for hooking up a portable propane cylinder

When using portable cylinder you would 'close' tank vapor valve (Shutoff solenoid OFF) then valve in portable and it feds into your RV System thru LP Reg.
  • Pretty straight forward install. It attaches between the tank and existing gas hose. just be sure to soap it and look for leaks after install.
