Insurance

Hi everyone, quick question. We moved from MN to FL for the change in the weather but are having some issues. Just got the bill from Progressive for the RV insurance renewal and WOW! We still have property in MN, is it legal to license and insure the RV in MN while being a resident of FL? Cuts the bill in half or more.
  • “is it legal to license and insure the RV in MN while being a resident of FL?”

No, otherwise the state with the lowest fees would have 125,000,000+ registrations. License fees raise money for states. Florida would come after you...you are a Florida resident. Next, not all insurance companies are licensed in every state for the sale of insurance nor do they wish to defend you in all states. They are hoping any accident you have is in the state where you reside and they have captive law firms. Statistics show you’ll usually have an accident near home.
  • First off, probably not the right forum to post this in.

Second, sounds like insurance fraud to me... Guess that's why insurance rates are so high for EVERYONE these days...

In the end, do what you think you need to do..

    Good luck!

    Mitch
  • Sounds like the guy is trying to stay legal and is looking for info, not how to defraud anyone.
  • I think that cat is out of the bag already. Had you from the start told them you were leaving the RV on the land up in MN, you may have been able to get away with it. But once you initiated FL insurance on the RV, they are not going to buy the RV is in MN. Even if you did leave it registered in MN and always stated it was staying up north, if your drivers license, mailing address and other vehicles are insured in FL, odds are they will rate it for FL anyway negating any savings.
  • Like I said, do whatever you think is best for you.. If it was "legal", then we'd all be doing it, right?
  • Sounds like playing with fire. Insurance companies are not stupid. They all probably have a huge amount of current claims on RVs right now in Florida. Play with them trying to save a buck and you had better dot your I's and cross your T's because if you have a major claim they will look deep to find a reason to deny it.
  • Are you willing to run it back to Mn every year for state inspections?
If not, how can you claim it is a Mn vehicle.
And at some point the fine folks in Mn may want a cut of your income for tax purposes.
Look into SD, no state insp.
  • Whatever state you are using for your drivers license is the same address you should use for your vehicle registrations and your insurances. It's just that simple, even if you are actually "staying" somewhere else.

If you've established dual residency, hey...?? it's an RV. It's made to move. Pick the state that works best for you and get all your credentials under one address.
  • You will have to state where the vehicle is "garaged." Since it is in Florida and subject to the risks there, claiming it is "garaged" in Minnesota would be fraud and give a legal excuse for insurance not to pay.
