Having been responsible for three teenage drivers, two being girls, I've gone through my share of banged up cars. My rule of thumb was to get an estimate from a few local independent repair shops and decide from there. I have a $1000 deductible so if I had to donate another grand ($2k repair bill) to keep insurance out of it that's what I did. You are looking at a lot more than a few grand and have two vehicles involved so I believe an insurance claim is in your near future.
