Looking at your pictures again I see you have a brake a way I'd shorten my safety cables so they were tight before the hitch could pull out of the receiver and tighten the brake a way cable as explained above.
The Ready Brake came out of the receiver according to the picture. No matter how long or short the safety cables and break away cable is it wouldn't have applied the brakes.
