Is TSP okay for roof and exterior cleaning?

Hi all y’all,

I’m finally about to set out on my adventure in about 10 days. I purchased my RV in April from a dealer, so it looked pretty good. It’s been sitting for the past 6 months and now it’s in desperate need of a good pre-adventure cleanup. Folks have said to use Spic & Span on the roof, which I haven’t been able to find in the San Marcos area where I’m currently living. I used TSP to clean the cigarette smoke film from the rigs interior. Would TSP be good to clean the roof (and the rest of the exterior). I’m asking because my rigs a Holiday Rambler with an aluminum skin and I’ve heard that TSP can react with aluminum (though the rig is painted of course). Any suggestions? For now I’m simply planning a scrub-down and wax job. My main concern is to not be hassled when I relocate by having a dirty shabby looking rig. Though I’m great at maintaining mechanicals, washing and cleaning not so much. However, I do run my car through the car wash every 6 months, whether it needs it or not. The problem is it invariably rains within hours of washing the car, so whytheheck did I bother to wash it in the first place!

PS I read somewhere that TSP was the active ingredient in Spic & Span.
  • TSP would NOT be my choice. I would think it could eat the wax or clear coat off the sides and dry out the caulking. My choice is mild dish soap and a extended brush. Then a few layers of mand rubbed paste wax once a year.
  • TSP mildly etches the surface it is cleaning. I would not use on exterior surfaces such as paint, fiberglass or gel coat.
  • I think you would ruin the exterior finish with that and subject the roof to undue etching and wear as well.
  • If you have the funds available I'd take the rig to a detail shop and let them do your first cleaning/waxing and then keep it up from there!!
  • TSP = trisodium phosphate. When dissolved in water will give a pretty basic solution (ph ~ 12) that is a great degreaser but certain not something I would use on the exterior of the coach.

  • I thought TSP is one of the steps recommended when waxing using Red Max Pro?
  • If your roof is EPDM do not use TSP. It containes citric acid and can do damage.

Some places have rules against TSP or any phosphate.

That said Spic and Span does a wonderful job on my roof. It is what I recommend.
