Just purchased a 2016 Cambria

Can anyone that owns a 2016 Cambria 30J share vehicle make, model and year they flat tow behind their motorhome? Thank you in advance. We're newbies to the RV lifestyle.

2009 29 ft Cambria towed a 2 door Jeep Wrangler and did not know it was even there. It had zero effect on mileage which after 45K miles averaged 8.5 MPG.
If you are setting up to tow ,do it right from the beginning. Being a mechanic I was able to set my Jeep up correctly from the start with all the wiring and brake systems to enjoy trouble free trips. It can be costly but well worth it.
I owned my Itasca Cambria for 6 years. I did all the repairs myself. They are a fine rig but like anything require attention. Any questions, just ask. Enjoy your rig.

Before you go looking for a tow car (aka toad or dinghy), know how much weight your motorhome can tow (usually found on the weights sticker maybe located inside your mh's closet) and the weight rating of the actual hitch built on your motorhome.

Here are the Dinghy Guides for each year. Each contains some education plus a list of that year's vehicles that are 4-down towable. Be sure to pay attention to the column "Automatic" or "Manual"!

No matter where you get your information about a car being towable...whether from the Dinghy Guide or a salesman or someone on this forum...ALWAYS check the actual car's owners manual under "Recreational Towing" (not emergency towing) before purchasing!

Towed a 2013 Fiat (manual) behind my Winnebago Aspect.

2013 chev sonic hatchback automatic. Its 2700# with about 50 cu ft of storage with backseat down and an additional 15 cu ft in a roof-rack box. All Sonic's except the RS model can be flat towed.

The cars need a baseplate , like a front hitch, installed to the its frame. That must be compatible to the tow bars selected. Some tow-bar brands are interchangeable.

The car needs to have running lights, directionals and brake lights to be wired to the MH via the 7- way rv plug.

The car ignition needs to ‘on’ the ‘acc’ position . This allows you to unlock the steering wheel as well as NOT record accumulated towing mileage on the odometer. If you click the ignition accidentally to the full ‘on’ position your mileage will add to the odometer.

Most cars need a wire harness wired in or as I did, drill a hole in each taillight housing installing an LED or 1157 bulb . Run that wire up front to the plug that connects to the MH.

I added a charge wire to keep the car battery charged while being towed. I wired it thru the harness to the MH. That way i do not need to pull any fuses while towing in the ON position.

Finally you will need brakes . I use a Brake Buddy 2. Its portable, so i can use it on my next car to be flat-towed.

Just keep in mind, you cannot backup the rv with a toad in place. You have to think ahead a little when you gas up. Don’t get yourself into a tight spot where you would need to back up.

Some cars have to be started every 200-300 towing miles to circulate the tranny fluid. I do that after gassing up.

We tow a 2018 GMC terrain all four down behind our motorhome, wanted to also tow my DW's caddy as it gets much better mpg, alas according to owner's manual it can not be flat towed. Towing with a class C or class A as no relevance, vehicle manufacturers dictate which vehicles are capable of being flat towed, neighbors and friends have towed the same vehicle with both motorhome types. Check online or your owner's manual to see if a specific vehicle can be towed all 4 down, RV dealers or service centers that set up motorhomes for towing will have this info handy as well. We have a 2012 Aspect which is the sister vehicle from winnebago and we tow a 2013 Hyundai elantra. It all depends on what you want can do the elantra is a manual transmission model and we have probably equal or more towed miles on it than driven. It weighs around 2800 lbs, has good wheel stance and tows well.

If you are limited to a automatic then you will need to search on as the hondas able to be towed are all older models. Some folks we knew bought a buick suv that they tow behind their DP but I dont know anything about which one etc. many say get a jeep but I know folks who had one and they have their share of issues and are not the most comfortable of vehicles if you plan to drive any distance. Good sam has a link to towed vehicles annually and I think it is due out next month for the current year. Do a site search for it for older/earlier vehicles. The hyundai are no longer 'towable" supposedly. Go to the roadmaster or other towing equipment sites they may have charts on available kits for various vehicles.
