Kwikee step issue

My Kwikee Series 35 step goes out as it should but when retracting, the motor will continue turning for about 8-10 seconds before shutting off. It will make a clacking sound as the motor spins. I've been told that the shutoff is based on the extra torque when the step reaches its limit. Do I have to replace the whole motor assembly or is there a simpler fix?
  • When I had problems similar to that, I loosened the bolts holding the assembly to the frame, and tried it again.

Presto, it worked just fine, so I put some shims between the steps and the frame and it kept on working.

I believe that by doing that it didn't have to put quite as much torque into moving, and it did not kick off the torque relay.
  • Sounds like a gear issue to me.....I bet you find a gear with some missing teeth......
  • There is a short rod about 1/2in long that goes in the top of the gear and then into a hole above.....if that pin is missing, worn, or not in there it will do what you describe.
  • You might check with the Kwikee and I might be wrong on this but I think there was a recall on some of their steps. I received something in the mail a month or so ago about it. The company that built our motorhome use's two different brands of steps and I think one of them is Kwikee. Turned out mine is another brand so mine isn't under any recall...

Update - the recall is on the Coach Step brand of steps.
