Ladders

Yalls,

I have a class-a that does not have a ladder on the back. I can't really install one either because it's a toy hauler. So, I'm looking for a ladder I can keep in the RV somewhere that I can use to get on the roof, and/or at least reach the top of the windows to wash them.

What ladders are you all packing with you if you need/want one? I keep looking at them and I'm not sure I need a 13 foot telescoping ladder for $220. A tall(ish) step ladder seems like the way to go, but how/where do I store something like that? Anyway, I've talked myself in circles about this and bought nothing, so I figured I'd ask you guys.

What type of ladders are you all packing with you?

Thanks,
Brian

Sorry, Bobs, getting up on my roof is very rare but I won’t get up on someone else’s because they lack confidence. It’s too dangerous and the injury is too severe. They need to do it themselves, pay a pro or stop RVing. I like to help but not endanger myself.

If your intent is to wash windows the folding step ladders (6' or 7') are very handy & easy to store. If you want to get on/off the coach roof SAFELY the telescoping ladder really should go a couple feet beyond the roof. If your coach is 12' a 13' telescoping ladder would be too short in my opinion. I carry a 15'6" telescoping ladder.

which brand, how compact does it get and where do you keep it?

I believe mine is the extend a climb brand I purchased it in 2015 when I got the Dutch Star. I just searched my Amazon history & remembered I think I got it at Sherwin Williams. Anyway they are all over the web especially Amazon. I have plenty of basement space so it fits easily down there. They are compact & not light. I'm thinking 35-40 lbs. There are many ladder choices out there to choose from.

In addition to the fixed roof ladder on the back, ours came with a factory folding ladder like this that folds into a 4" x 4" compact size and stores in the basement slide out tray. It works great for windows, awnings, and general maintenance, but a bit short to get on the roof.

I am a big fan of terra firma. The more firma, the less terror. Therefore, I spend as little time on ladders as possible. If your main priority is washing the tops of your windows, buy a telescoping wash brush. On the rare occasion you want to access your roof, borrow a neighbors’ ladder. It seems that everyone else is carrying at least one of the best ladders available for any job you need to do. If you’re lucky, they also have the requisite skills to perform any repair or maintenance required and will happily clamber up their ladder and demonstrate. Then, all you have to do is sit in your lawn chair, toasting their outstanding abilities, and perhaps provide your wife to steady the ladder.

I will add if I had to BUY a ladder.. That multi-segmented thing that can be a straight (like and extension) ladder. A Step ladder or a scaffold would be my FIRST choice.

Straight ladder for getting on the roof
Scaffold or step ladder for washing and waxing Scaffold is the best way to wash/wax since you do not need to move nearly as often .

I'm debating whether or not to share my ladder situation....
I know this is Claas A and I tow a TT, but..

Oh what the heck!

I carry, at all times, a 3 foot, 4 foot, 6 foot, 8 foot, 10 foot and a 12 foot stepladder. And if I need to get higher I pull down my 24 foot extension ladder! :B
I sold my 2 - 34 foot extension ladders because I don't want to go up there anymore.

Getting on top of any rig isn't an issue for me. I've loaned my ladders to many a neighbor who needs to get up on top of their RV for something. And many times gone up there myself because they lack the confidence.

(My work vehicle is my tow vehicle and I have a rack to carry all this stuff)

But in answer to your query, I have suggested to many folks to get one of those multi function, multi purpose fold up aluminum ladders. They can be set as a stepladder or a single longer one to lean on something to climb up. They fold up compact enough to stow away in a storage compartment.

I decided to go with a GP Logistics SLDD7 7' Compact Folding Ladder:
https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B009IJUL4O/ref=oh_aui_search_detailpage?ie=UTF8&psc=1

I like that it takes little space in a pass thru compartment and isn't as heavy as the "little giant" type ladders. I have a Werner version of the Little Giant to the S&B house, but found that it would take up more room, is heavier and more awkward to stow and remove from MH storage compartment. I do have a OEM ladder on the back of our Newmar, so the GP folding ladder isn't my only option for getting on the roof of the motorhome.

I have a convertable Step/Extension ladder which sears USED to sell. it's just exactly long enough to put me on the roof safely.. More in a bit on that.

THey also make Telescoping ladders.. The one I have is too short but it's useful for a ton of other stuff.

The Factory POS .. I reached out with ONE HAND and pulled it off the RV.. ONE HAND.. it is good for about 150 pounds not much more The Sears ladder is rated 250 tested to 500 and works well with my 300.

The safely part.. I'm a former ladder monkey (Worked as a Roofer for 7 years when I was younger and more foolish) and very used to climbing a ladder set up at the proper angle. (Proper angle. Tips of toes to feet of ladder. Reach out arm straight and about level and grab a rung. Heal of hand: too steep. Finger tips: Too shallow: Comfortable Grip: Proper angle)

Climbing a VERTICAL laddre like the Factor POS.. Much scarier Much Much Scarier.

Highest I've ever climbed on a Vertical ladder: 100' (antenna tower)
I'm acrophoboic (Fear of heights) TRUST I did... In my safety gear.

I use every bit of my 12 foot collapsable ladder and my TT is only 10’ 1” at the top of the AC. TH should be taller. Don’t skimp on length. Twelve footers are a hundred bucks on Amazon.

Jayco makes a ladder for toy haulers that mounts on the SIDE of the Trailer. It folds flush when in transit and you pull 4 pins to expand it out to go on top. BUT, buying it from a Jayco dealer will probably be a LOT more than $200. The shipping alone will be at least $100. Doug
