The red light lights if its charging. But more to the point its only 5 watts which is next to nothing. It wouldn't pay to have it repaired by someone other than yourself. If you want measurable solar charging you will have to add a panel to the roof. I put up a 100 Watt panel - it works great but they are not cheap.
