New campground situation for us

Made reservations two years prior for campground in Mammoth CA. We have been here multiple times so we know what spots work good for us. They do reserve spots and you can pay a lock fee to guarantee the desired spot. On our way here Sunday we get a call that the truck in our spot broke down. They called at 1:30pm asked if we would take a different spot or should they tow the vehicle out of the spot. I requested them to tow since each spot here is different and many do not acomadate a 40 ft 4 slide MH. Thought all was set got there about two hours later checked in and was sent to the site to find the previous camper still there. Office then stated they can make the current person move so we need to go to different spot. We can have the spot once they get the truck repaired. So we spend Sunday night in a spot that fits but not one we would ever book. Now it’s Monday walk by spot and truck is gone assuming it was towed. This was after we checked in with the office after 9:30 am before truck was still at site. Truck returns under own power at 2:00 when we are returning from an outing. Wanting to get our MH set up in the reserved site we wait 2 hours before gong to the office to check status. Office states that they have not been informed that truck has been repaired so they call the individuals cell but they do not answer so we are in limbo until they move fron the site. The individual could easily move to another site so we can get on with our vacation. A long rant for a new situation and inconsiderate camper in my opinion. It was strange when we got the original call about the situation they stated it would probably be two days before they move.

Did get the lock fee refund plus one night free. Hopefully they leave today the refund is OK but rather have the reserved spot versus a spot that has no shade and a “nice” view of the RV storage yard. Well at least this hasn’t happened to us before in all the years camping.

Good to hear.

Go strike up a conversation with the truck owner with no pretenses that you are supposed to be in that site and see what his story is. If he's been broken down it will probably come up in conversation. If he's just there enjoying the park that will probably come up too.
There are 24 hours in every day - it all depends on how you choose to use them.

I wouldn't be surprised if the management is telling you one thing and the truck owner another. The truck owner may not even know they are not supposed to be in that spot.

I don't know what to give for advice, sounds like you are doing what you can.

Well,
I for one, feel for you. All this "Chill out" **** is for the birds. Many, many folks make reservations at PARTICULAR campgrounds for PARTICULAR SPOTS, everyday of every year because, IT'S WHAT THEY WANT! And, without following each and every RVer who's ever made a reservation, it's hard to tell just how many, like you, have been made to take another spot. You don't make reservations, ESPECIALLY TWO YEARS IN ADVANCE, just to get there and be told, SORRY, THERE'S NOTHING WE CAN DO ABOUT IT!

Well, it does sound as if they (the campground management) "tried" to quell the situation but, for whatever reason, they failed fo follow up on it.

We have been told many, many times, "yes, you can have that spot, but, only from this date, to this date, as it's reserved both before and after. And, if we like what the dates were, we take the spot(s). But, when the departure date approaches, we don't wait 'till it's time and we see the folks that have reserved our spot, WE'RE GONE!

Now, at this point, all we're all getting is your side of the story which, we're all assuming it true and accurate. This would presuppose, that the campground is surely at fault and, needs to get its act together, especially when REPEAT clients are involved.

You plan, you get ready, you've MADE RESERVATIONS, and make the trip, only to find you DON'T GET WHAT YOU'VE BEEN GUARANTEED to get, especially after you've paid to LOCK THAT SPOT! I think this situation is DEAD WRONG. The "Chill out" factor here doesn't cut it with me. Tell the other folks, the ones in your spot to CHILL OUT while moving to another spot 'cause this one's been paid for WAAAY in advance.

Now, does this happen with hotel rooms too? I mean, if you know what room you've used in past, at a given hotel, and you know why you like it, and you RESERVE it and they say, YEP, we're got you locked in for your dates, but, you arrive and they say, SORRY, WE CAN'T GET THE PREVIOUS OCCUPIERS of your room to move, even though we told them they had to be out by your arrival date, too bad.

If that were the case, then why reserve anything? Now, we've also encountered campgrounds that will reserve a spot but, NOT A SPECIFIC SPOT. They'll give you a spot when you arrive but, they will not guaranty that the one you wanted will be available. You know in advance that you may, or may not get the spot you'd like to have.

And, we've camped in Mammoth a few times. There are two major campgrounds in the leading edge of town, as you approach it from the 395 highway. The one on the left is a private. The one on the right is I think, either a state campground or a U.S. Forestry campground and is more or less, a non-hookup campground, if I recall. This means it's highly possible you're speaking of the one on the left.

If so, yep, that campground, especially in the season, is a sought after campground and is fairly booked up for the entire season. They even have over flow parking lots that are quite often, full up. What does all this mean, you may ask? Well, it could be one of those things that, if they piss off a given amount of clients, even repeat ones, they still won't lose any business 'cause they know they'll still sell spots, even if someone does do a BAD REVIEW in any review address.

Is this your situation, not a clue. And as far as this "chill out" junk, yep we do CHILL OUT, when we've gotten what we've asked for and were promised. We chill out plenty while on vacations and trips. But, there has to be some honesty and integrity in business and these campground operations. Ok, let the flaming begin, got the suit on!

It seems to me you have an issue and you need to decide what will make you happy if you cannot get into your chosen site for X days. This is simply a negotiation. What will make you happy and what will they give you (if anything). They appear to hold most of the cards so you may not get much. If so, you are faced with a decision, stay in a poor site or move on. To management you are one of X number of customers, they probably would like to help you but they have may have bigger issues to deal with then you. Talk to them logically, try to cut a deal and then decide what you want to do to enjoy your vacation and get on with it. Stay and accept what you negotiated or move on, as has been stated, life it way to short to sweat the small stuff. As my mother would tell you- in ten years we will laugh about this.

We've had a few less-than-desirable camping spots in our years and years of camping experiences. When that happens we do all we can to make the best of the situation.

Why not turn things around and write out everything that is good about the spot you are currently parked on. First being ... all sun! Perfect for sunbathing! Second being...behind the RV storage lot...no noisy campers back there, no dogs barking back there, no campfire smoke rolling over your site from back there. All positives.

If you begin to make a list, you might find yourself in a better frame of mind. Remember... when life thrown lemons at you, make lemon-aid.

We had lemon-aid last week. What started as a disaster ended up being a really, really sweet true lemon-aid experience! We ended up with so much of a richer experience, I'm really glad the original plan went belly-up!

This is a management issue, regardless if the truck owner is playing them. They have a business obligation. I would have some stern words, as well as a promise to let everyone know how you were treated, if they cannot get you into the site reserved and paid a lock in fee. The CG management is in the wrong.

Get your lock fee back and tell the manager of your displeasure ( but it would seem they don't care). Just forget about it, isn't worth steaming over, other than your lock fee refund.

Nobody gives a "poop" about you. Not the person in your spot and not the campground. You just have to do what you can and if that doesn't work, leave. Or enjoy your stay at the site that works but is not your favorite.
What I post is my 2 cents and nothing more. Please don't read anything into my post that's not there. If you disagree, that's OK.
Can't we all just get along?

It's either an 'all about me' person with the truck in your reserved spot or, someone at the CG is taking care of a friend. (Or screwed up)

You can't get in the spot so don't stress over it. You're on vacation.
