Newbie Questions on 6th day of first trip...

So far, we are not having a good trip with our first motorhome, and it is only day 6. We have an appt with Freightliner for next Tuesday (11/11). We are fortunate enough to at least be fairly close to a real Freightliner service center in Tucson. Our MH was purchased new, it now has 3,500 miles on it, of which 2,300 were put on in the last 6 days. Just a few questions if any of you have any experience with this stuff;

1) The Transmission light icon and a warning message on the dashboard now stays lit for about maybe 10 seconds at start up. It has not done that before (1st 5 days). The light does go out, but we are wondering if this is normal. This is a new occurrence in the last day. Does this occur to any of you? Recall we only have 6 days of experience, but this never occurred during the first 5 days of the trip.

2) The low battery warning message appears on the screen, but not the icon on the chassis dashboard, again, only at start up, but this is also new in the last day. Does this ever occur to any of you?

3) While the DW was driving, the ABS icon light came on, all dashboard lights illuminated, cruise control dis-engaged, the gauges all went to zero, and then a moment later, all lights/gauges returned to normal. This has now happened twice. The 2nd time it was during a braking operation going about 3 mph. I will report this to Freightliner when I take it in next Tuesday. Anyone ever had this happen?

4) Lastly, I was unable to turn off the engine this morning using the ignition switch. Upon leaving our campsite, I drove to a place to attach the toad, turned off the ignition, only to hear some humming sound from the rear of the coach. Turns out the engine was still running and I had an active light, which was the malfunction indicator lamp which indicates a problem with the after treatment system. We had 5 fault codes from this issue. Anyone ever been unable to turn off their engine?

Sorry for the long message, I am looking for anyone's experience that might shed light on any of this.

I'm hoping I do not have a lemon.

Thanks, Tom
  • Our new Freightliner acted up during our first two trips. Both trips we got a check engine light that stayed on for the duration of the trip. It was an EGR related issue. It was eventually repaired, but now I've learned that when I turn on the ignition, I wait until all of the gauges sweep and set, before I start the coach. This gives all of the idiot lights a chance to cycle.

You should have an information window on your dash. It will reveal any codes you may have thrown.
  • This morning before my Tuesday apt, I thought I would give it a start to see if anything has changed. Really nothing has changed, but rather than just crank it after the glow plug light when off, I left the key in that position before starting and the trans light stayed lit for about 10 seconds, and then goes out. So the trans light stays lit (warning message and the icon light) before the engine is even running. Not that this helps me determine anything, but I thought I would throw it out there, it might be interesting to someone. I wonder if I can get a trouble code off the transmission somehow in that short period of time. I do not know if one is even generated.

Below are the details of the MH.

The MH is a 2104 Winnebago Journey 36M, Freightliner chassis, 6 speed Allison trans 3000 MH, Cummins ISB XT 6.7 L Turbo Charged Diesel with 360 HP, and 3,600 miles on the odometer. Not sure what else I could tell you about it. I am not a handy automotive guy.

The engine seems fine, always has (knock on wood). Even the trans seems to run fine (knock on wood again). Can't say whether the after treatment works or not. Not sure how I would know whether it is or is not working. I have not lost any engine power at all in all this.

    Thanks, Tom
  • First off, post as much info about YOUR rig...make, model, year etc. That will help a lot. Second, look under the dash and see if all the wires going to the IGNITION switch are pushed in solidly. Sounds like you have a loose ground wire somewhere and with the coach not shutting off, I'd start with the ignition switch....good luck...Dennis
  • I vote for a likely bad connection, likely a bad ground somewhere. Definitely needs looking into, and since the rig is so new, I'm certain the mfg is going to want to go over it carefully and fix it. This is NOT the way things are supposed to be.
  • Sorry for your issues. I had a similar problem on the maiden voyage of our MH back in '07. I disconnected both chassis and house batteries for about 10 minutes using the disconnects in the battery bay and everything cleared and no problem. Just a suggestion but it does sound like a bad connection somewhere.
  • If the temperature has dropped where you are at, that could explain number 1 and possibly number 2.
  • We experienced the low battery warning light on a trip out west. Fortunately it was a sensor that Freightliner replaced expeditiously. The codes will tell them waht the problems are. Don't get discouraged. Stuff always happens. Good luck!
  • wow--so sorry you are having so many new issues popping up all of a sudden. at least you aren't 100 miles between nothing. thinking your DW had nerves of steel when that happened--good for her. i would have had a problem for sure. hopefully the people next tues will have a ready, simple explanation and fix the computer or whatever it is quickly. luk what happens on tuesday!
  • WOW, that is not what should be happening. Sounds like someone disconnected the battery and messed up the computer big time. Go right to the top don't deal with service people.
