Observations from a new class A'er

As mentioned in prior posts we just transitioned from a 41' fifth wheel with a dually to a 2008 gas v10 36' class A. I thought I would provide some observations for new class A folks.

No toad. Given that we have downsized I find that I can wiggle the RV in to just about any campsite, shipping center and gas station. Not having a toad allows me to backup and get into very tight spaces. I will likely put my motorcycle on a hitch carrier so that I can run to the market for milk, etc.

I get good mpg. Mpg on the trip so far has been between 7.5 and 10. I'm happy. See one of my other posts for details.

I have power. The 365 HP v10 has more then enough power. The tow/haul works very well as an "engine brake" on long downhill runs.

At 36' I feel that we have plenty of storage room both inside and out. We are a family of four.

The RV handles reasonably well but it got pushed around a lot in bad winds on i10 west of phoenix. Not nearly as stable as the dually with fifth wheel.

It is really nice being in the class A while driving down the road. We can do much longer trips, longer days in the motorhome with the little kids. Mine are eight.

Holding tanks and water tank on the ds350 are fine for us. We were able to get five showers without the gray tank completely filling up.

If we are just overnighting I typically won't even hook up for power, sewer, etc.

I'm thinking the thing is a keeper.
  • I installed air bags on the back of my 35' Class A gas RV. Really helps with the big trucks passing...Installed bags due to Cruiser Lift for my motorcycle. Benefit from the swaying was extra. Even my wife can drive now.....
  • If your happy with your choice great. Things won't always be perfect, but the journey is worth the trip!

Look into the cheap handling fix if not already done. Helps with the side winds.

Did the CHF on our Georgetown 351 and it made a big difference. Also learned that having my water and gas tank as full as possible helps with the winds. If it is too windy we stop for the night.

  • Glad to see things are working out well for you. DW and I (both retired) bought a 32' Georgetown a little over 4 years ago. We'd started out with a horrible old ('85) Class C, but we liked the lifestyle.

Regrettably, the cost of running the beast and the much higher CG prices than our time with the Class C have forced us out. We're now retired RVers.
  • I'm like you in being Pretty happy with my gasser 36 foot class A. While I tow a jeep everywhere I go, its easy enough to disconnect and squeeze the coach into just about any spot there is. I really don't get pushed around by the wind but I kind of wish I could travel a little more distance between fill-ups.

Congratulations on your new Class A!!! Sounds like you got a nice one. We did exactly like you did as we went from a 38 foot fifth wheel to a 37 foot Allegro Bay which was gas. We found the same things that you did especially the wind. We did find that the wind problem is greatly reduced in a diesel. We enjoyed visiting your area last year as we went up the Oregon Coast and ended up camping on the Columbia River North of Portland. We really enjoyed the Gorge. Enjoy your new coach and use it every chance you get
  • Congratulations on the new rig. Looks nice and glad to hear you are pleased with the decision to move from 5th wheel to class A. It is nice to be able to move about and do things while someone is driving and when you stop for lunch or a quick break. You are correct about the wind, these things have the aerodynamics of a brick!

    Enjoy the new rv.
