I have been pining for a Scenicruiser for years and yesterday I got one. #149 is now mine.
It will need a fair amount of work but There are so few of them left that I couldn't walk away. Now I just have to convince the wife that I am not an idiot and still useful.
Could be I just bought my new home. Oh well, could be worse, I could have had the hots for a corvette.

The scope, expense, and work involved with this project is totally MIND NUMBING to me and exponentially beyond anything I could possibly take on myself.

BUT... for the person who would enjoy every step of this effort and who has the time and funds to make it come together, just as it should be... I'd say it's an AMAZING project.

If really done right ($$$$), the final result should be absolutely fantastic. I'm envisioning a completely up-dated motor coach, swathed in the charm and total coolness of a classic two-level Greyhound exterior. A totally renewed RV motor coach which could start fresh and have decades of reliable, up-to-date comfort and travel ahead of it.

I so hope you are able to complete this in a magnificent way and can't wait to see the end result, which I would imagine is years away from now.

I removed the engine cradle from the bus and had it sandblasted by a friend. I knew that there was going to be a lot of repair, but I was surprised by the amount of rust damage on the underside.

The old joints between aluminium and steel were riveted. The rivets were almost dissolved away so was the steel and the Aluminium rail was gone at the end.

The worst damage is at the very back where the motor mount is located. The metal here is now paper thin. I will have to rebuild this whole area.

I will be rebuilding this area to fit my current engine but also hope to allow for future engine upgrades. Maybe an 8V92 Detroit someday.

Congrats on your bus! That thing is awesome! You ought to make a thread for it in skoolie.net, in sure they would love to see it. Please keep us updated as that is a really cool project!

Tony, thanks for the link.

The Radius Rods I am rebuilding are massive and somewhat unique. The one shown is splined half way through and matches splines on the 1 inch bolt and the attachment plate. On the other end of the rod the center piece has a tapered hole that matches the tapered pin on the bus frame. In order to use any other rods I would have to modify the attachment points on the axle and the bus. I hope to avoid that by rebuilding the original bushings with more modern materials. If they work, they should last longer than I will.

Mighty Thor,

Here is a video showing those rebuildable HD heim joints. You want to start watching at 4:40 and they start talking about the joints before they show them.

BTW - they say they never broke during testing and they maxed out the test equipment.

Here is the link to EFM the company who makes them.

Very happy to see progress on this project.. I love the old bus conversions and wish I could do one.

If you end up being unhappy with the results of your new bushings: you might want to try the "rebuildable Heavy Duty Heim Joints" seen on Xtreme 4X4 TV Show.
They are aftermarket and I see them, they are cool; if that is of any help..
They come in all kinds of sizes. I'm sure you can find something that will work. And to be able to rebuild them when needed is a big plus.

BTW - As for your pictures.
I right clicked over each picture and copied the properties URL link and then I opened them in their own page.
I found the size for all your pictures in this post to be 2048 by 1536 pixels.
But opening them in their own page from the porperties url link; the pictures opened at ONLY 844 by 633 pixels. That is odd..

I even copied one of those links and tried to repost it here - hoping it make it smaller like with the individual pages of pictures I did.
But sadly it opened at the larger size again like in this thread. So I removed them.

Keep up the work and please share lots of info and pictures!
Not being able to do a project like this myself - I'm living through yours. GGG

All the Best!
Sincerely, Tony

Sorry bout the size. These were off my phone and uploaded to my online Photo Album that is supposed to resize automatically. I am not sure what happened that they ended up so big.

For now the Family refers to the bus as The Big Blue Bus, or in the case of my wife "That #%$##%#$%^ Bus!" For now I usually call it Big Blue. Around my wife I try not to mention it at all.

Oh Mighty Thor, we, your humble followers, most respectfully ask on bended knee that when you post images to please use the option to resize your uploaded images to 480 in height and 640 in width. Difficult to view oversized images that are bigger than the PC monitor plus they take longer to down load on a limit speed network.

Great to see you are making progress. Have you decided on a name for the bus?

Started working on the suspension of the bus before I do the engine and transmission install. The bushings in the radius rods are shot and are hard to find. I did find a California supplier, but I decided to try to make my own first. The California supplier uses my old metal parts so this won't keep me from using the commercial bushings later if this doesn't work.

I am pouring my own Polyurethane bushings in place. The factory bushings were rubber, these will be a little harder but I note that lots of modern semi trucks are using poly in their bushings.

First step was to remove and clean up the old metal parts. I used a paint stripper wheel on a drill to clean the inside of the radius rod and a belt grinder to clean the old rubber off the center piece. I needed to center the middle piece in the end of the rod so I used the right thickness of cardboard to shim the radius rod up the right amount.

I used plastic wrap to make sure that the bottom of the rod was sealed so none of the liquid would leak out.

The Polyurethane rubber is a two part mix that you mix by weight. I have a new scale that I used to measure the stuff. Just mix and pour till you have the gap filled.

Now just wait. The rubber starts to get stiff after a couple of hours but takes several days to reach full cure.

It will be some time before I will be able to install these rods and even longer before I can road test them, but I will update as I go.

Steven,

I like your project and love the old style buses like that.

I’ve had to deal with logistics getting these much smaller RVs transported. ggg

I cannot fathom what it took for you to get that one transported!

I look forward to seeing your project come together as you envision it.

Please post more pictures and info when you can.
Sincerely,Tony

You need to call Country Coach in oregon. They are in the process of restoring one that I believe is exactly like yours. When I was there last summer they were working on the wiring. They may have some great info for you.

I have a question. On the original 2-engined models, did both engines run all the time but the 2nd only drive when extra power was needed?

That is a way cool rig and it'll be good to see the old girl back on the road. Hope you make it to AZ some time with it.
