Paint/Fiberglass problem

We have a 2008 Jayco Seneca Class C Motor home, purchased in Arizona last summer. This is our 3rd Jayco product, started with a truck camper, upgraded to a class C Designer and now the Seneca. We are having a problem in that when we purchased it we had the outside coated with a protective sealant. Within 4 months, the fiberglass is getting small 5/16" verticle splits which are more predominent in the darker colors but definitely appearing in the lighter colors also. There are literatly thousands of them. Only in the fiberglass areas. The cab and bay doors are uneffected. Has anyone else had this problem? The coating company, Jayco and the dealer are all claiming it's not their fault. When we purchased it, it had not issues at all.
  • Amazing, it's no ones fault.....never have I seen what you are describing, a few photos would be helpful....
  • I'll put my money on the "protective" sealant or something the previous owner did or didn't do. There are hundreds of SENECA's out there, mine included (08)and I have never seen anyone else complain about cracks in the paint/ fiberglass. There were a few complaints about the "clear coat" peeling/flaking on the cab over but that is the only thing I have heard about. JAYCO can't be resposnsible for a unit that is 6 years old especially since the problem wasn't there when you got it.
  • Does the coating itself come with any kind of warranty?

Fiberglass "moves" a fair bit. Sounds like it is starting to delaminate or shrink. Wouldn't be surprised if it starts lifting.

Delamination usually means incorrect or poor substrate preparation.

  • First Jayco says Thermo Heat cracking, now the say it is outgassing. From what I have read outgassing is an odor problem. I'll get some photos posted. Coating company is claiming their product wouldn't cause this.
  • What seems funny to me is the fact that the cracks were't there before you had it sealed. If the sealer stoped the fiberglass from breathing it could very well be the cause. Outgassing this late in the game probably wouldn't have a lot of odor, especially out in the atmosphere.

For me, it's just too much of a coincidence. Good luck getting it resolved.
  • Thank you for your help. I also bellieve it is a problem from the coatiing.
  • A gelcoat will eventually spider because of the movement of the fiberglass, but it goes on THICK and lasts years before going south. Maybe the sealant was sprayed on too thin?

  • I'm checking with the dealer that applied the coating, suggesting the coating could have been applied incorrectly We'll see.
