Power Gear Living Room Slide Adjustment

I did a Google on this slide a long time ago. The slide has always extended pretty fast but would drag when coming back in. It is a flat floor slide. I finally replaced the motor at the suggestion of a repair shop, made it a little better but didn't solve the problem. Then I had my wife bring the slide in while I watched underneath. The wheels near the gear drive weren't turning. I contacted Power Gear and they advised I replace the wheels. I have a complete shop so I made a device to use with a jack to raise the gears up just enough to take pressure off the wheels and replaced them. Couldn't see anything wrong with the old wheels.

I have never noticed a problem with the room being off until yesterday. The slide toppers went bad and we are having new ones made so I was cleaning around the slide when I noticed the gap at the front and the closeness at the rear. I need to move the top of the slide out about a half inch. My rig has the storage compartments that move with the slide out. So there is adjustment bolts above the storage compartments under the slide.

Will keep the forum posted on my progress. I was hoping someone with a Power Gear slide on a Southwind might have solved this problem before. I love my Motorhome but it has had numerous problems from front to back. I have taken it to repair shops and then had to fix the mess they made, so I want to avoid that if I can. I have the time to work on it, they don't.

Power gear has a manual available on their web site covering most of their slides. It is 111 pages long, and it contains that diagram that you reference.

I recently had to adjust my slide, and someone on this forum pointed out that (at least on my motorhome) there are slide adjustment screws in the ceiling of the storage bays (which is beneath the floor of the motorhome). The adjustments are covered with a plastic housing. My adjustments were inside the plastic housing, and were bolt heads about 9/16 inch size, with the bolts being anchored with washer tabs bent against the flats of the bolt heads.

Without that tip to look inside the plastic housings in the ceiling of the storage bay, I'd still be looking for those adjustments.

Also keep in mind that the power gear diagrams will only describe the rollers supplied by power gear. About 50% of the rollers are supplied by the coach manufacturer, and are not described in the power gear documents.

I also have some slide roller adjustments inside some cabinets above the floor (kitchen cabinets).

The gears are not the problem. When the slide is out you can see the aluminum frame behind the black rubber seal on the edge toward the front of the motorhome. The back end of the slide is almost against the opening. When it goes in it seals properly against the opening buy you can tell it is cocked in the opening. It is a power gear slide mechanism.

This is just another in a long list of adventures I have taken with this unit.

If power gear, put slide out and use some kind of marker and count and mark every five teeth on the RACK. Then when you come to the gear, see that both gears are meshing in the same rack tooth, it is called checking the timing. For example mine were 2 teeth off, one gear was meshed at, for example meshed with rack tooth 31 and the other side was meshed tooth 29. When the slide comes in, the one side hit the wall first about 2 teeth sooner then the other side. If it is off you just have to drive the shear pin out of the gear, slide the gear to the side, then move the slide in or out by hand and slip the gear back into the proper mesh at the same mark as the opposite gear. Put the pin back in. You are now back in TIME, test and see what happens.

When mine was new the dealer had to remove the slide to repair something and when they put it back in they got it out of time. I fixed it myself instead of driving 30 miles back to the dealer.

Don't know your floorplan, but we found ours behind drawers below the kitchen stove We have a cabinet (no oven) You couldn't see it without removing the large lower drawer.
