Progressive Insurance questions

As I do every year, I check with numerous insurance companies to get competitive quotes. I have a very good driving record with zero claims.
As a point of reference, I have never found any company that could beat my existing company in the last 5 years. Recent quotes from the following companies are similar to what I get every year.
State Farm, +$515 over my existing
AARP/Hartford, +$478
Travelers, +$450
Geico, +$505
Nationwide, +$550

And then I get this quote from Progressive that is $471 LESS than my existing policy for a year, even tho they only write 6 month policies.
I have never been with Progressive and this is the first year that they have even been competitive.
Has anyone had experience with Progressive "low-balling" a quote to get the new policy and then jacking up the price next year, even without a claim.

After getting several more additional quotes, and reading all of the comments here, I ended up going with Allstate. They were less than my original company and a little bit more than progressive.
I dealt with an independent agent that wrote policies for several different companies and they were able to give me their own opinion of various insurance companies. I guess I will see what happens when the policy goes up for renewal next year.
I did get some good info from them which was to NOT use the Allstate, or any other insurance company's roadside service policy since ANY usage counts as a claim against your insurance, which will show on your personal claim record that is available for other companies to see.
The other was that I could take the ONLINE driving course(55+ drivers) and lower my rate about $15 for each driver that takes the course. This discount is good for three years and the course costs around $20.
I found the idea of taking an ONLINE course completely useless in determining if someone 55 or older has the physical capabilities to drive a vehicle safely.

Ron, Iโ€™ve never had Proggressive Insurance on a motorhome so I canโ€™t comment on there rates! But, before I got married and had a RV, I had Proggressive insurance on my auto. My wife shopped around and found me insurance with Nation Wide for $900.00 less a year for the same coverage. That made me so angry I never went back to Proggressive, so far in the past 25 yrs. In reality itโ€™s my fault for not shopping around, but that experience still bothered me.

If you have had Progressive for years your rate is not likely to increase. But for new policies Progressive uses something akin to bait and switch. You will get a low rate to get you signed on. Then you will see considerable rate increases until you find it way more expensive than the others. making it necessary to start looking for another provider. This has been our own experience as well as others we know. We now have a policy more expensive that Progressives initial quote but less than the Progressive policy after the immediate rate increases. Our driving record has been clean for over 30 years and our credit score is very good thank you. Chuck

Just received my Progressive renewal notice. Last year it was. $509 this year $551. Even my car insurance with USAA went up this year. No accidents or tickets.

Had progressive for about 10 years om DP, Mercedes, F350, F150, and my Smart car Toad. 1 DP windshield, one awning, and one very minor accident and never an increase. I also pay by the year BUT the DP is for some reason on a different policy out of Tampa, FL

I had Progressive for Auto, RV, Boat, and ATV for many years. I was considered a "diamond" level member. No claims over all that time except a couple of windshield chips fixed with the injection fix. I always called them the "Insurance Company I Loved to Hate." Rates were always very competitive, but I had bad experiences.

One was their program where you plug their device into your vehicle so they can monitor your driving. In theory, they say your rate cannot increase as a result. Half way through the program we got congratulatory emails stating that both vehicles being monitored were on track to receive a double-digit percentage decreases in the rate. Nothing negative was being seen on the monitoring except my wife worked midnights and they don't like nighttime driving...but her vehicle was still set to earn a 13% discount. At the end of the program, my vehicle got a 2% discount and my wife's increased almost 16%! We asked about the increase as one of the terms of the program was that your rate would not increase. They gave us some line about a general increase that was causing it and not the monitoring program results. Of course, since they would not give details, we had no way of knowing what caused the rate increase. I am convinced that half-way through the program they send those letters in an effort to keep those devices plugged in for several more weeks to gather information as there's no way that in just a few weeks we would go from percentage decreases in the teens to low single digit decrease on one and double digit increase on the other. Liars, plain and simple.

I also foolishly thought I would save some money and get their roadside assistance since it was much lower cost than the Goodsam program I always carried before. I had a rear tire blowout on my Class A and was safely able to get off the freeway to a parking lot. I called their roadside assistance number and, honest-to-God, the young lady on the other end literally did not know what a motorhome was. I had to describe it and exactly what I needed for a service. Even then, she was trying to send me to RV dealerships, not semi-type road service providers. I finally just hung up and called my son-in-law who does OTR trucking and he gave me the name and number for a regional service provider that was there within the hour and replaced the tire. Believe me, that Progressive program was cancelled the next day and before I pulled out of the parking lot I was in, I had gone online to Goodsam and reinstated my Roadside service with them!

The final straw with them is when my pickup got hit by a bushel basket size mass of breaker rock that came flying off a semi-hauling rock carrier coming toward me at high speed on a narrow two-lane road. The flying rocks took out the windshield and besides major body damage, including some impacts so great that they went all the way through metal, there were also scratches and dings from smaller rock pieces since some of the load of flying rock hit the pavement right in front of me, then shattered and bounced up. Their adjuster nitpicked every scratch and dent in my pickup, which was in near pristine condition prior to this. They refused to cover damage to the bumper facia which had dings and gouges through it, clearly made by the rocks. There was one gouge across my driver door that was about 9 inches long by 3/4" wide that they said was from someone keying my door...I know there was no damage on that door prior to this happening. Keying creates thin scratches, not a gouge 3/4" wide! Fortunately my body shop just fixed most of the things Progressive would not cover, but I still have a damaged bumper facia. That was the last straw for me with Progressive. Why pay if they won't cover the damage fully?

My daughter told me she had just saved a LOAD by switching to Farmers. Since no one had ever beat Progressive's rates, I was skeptical, but across all my motorized insurance, on not only an apples to apples, but actually better coverage by Farmers in some cases, they beat Progressive by over $800 on my Class A diesel and personal vehicles...most all of that on my motorhome coverage. With homeowners included, which I had through another carrier that had never been beaten on price, my total savings went to over $1300 a year, which was over 20%. And another benefit is I actually have a local agent I can work with. I would highly recommend that anyone shopping for insurance of any kind be sure to quote Farmers.

PS. Someone else mentioned great service and rates from Foremost. Farmer's owns Foremost and my RV, boat, and ATV policy through Farmers is underwritten through Foremost.

He said this was 10 years ago so things were more manual back then too. Now (at least in California) the insurance company and DMV computers are all linked together. DMV knows instantly if you lose or cancel your insurance. So he wouldn't have had to be audited on the other cars, as they would already know if they were insured or not.

Exactly... In most/all states where vehicle insurance is mandatory, insurance companies are required to report cancellations to the DMV. No "dirty tricks" involved, just adherence to the state regulations. I was subjected to an insurance audit years ago when I switched carriers in conjunction with a vehicle/plate change. A DMV software glitch prevented the new policy info from company A from overriding the cancellation from company B, triggering the audit.
