Public Storage

Do you store your RV in a public/commercial facility when not in use?
We're thinking about upgrading to a B+/C, but the dear Home Owners Assn. won't let us store it on our property. Do many of you use public/commercial facilities? What's to look for and what to avoid. I know price and proximity are key factors. What's the expected price range per month/year. Where do I start.
  • I would check Craigslist under Parking/Storage heading. You'll see commercial business as well as private individuals offering RV storage space for rent.

Prices can be as low as $50 to $600 depending on the amenities and indoor or outdoor storage. You should be able to find many for $100 to $150 outside of a major city. In the city then the cost will be higher.

An alternative is to look for an RV Park with monthly spaces for rent in an area you like to visit or near your home.
  • I have also seen some rv parks that do seasonal rentals that offer storage.
  • I store our Winn. Aspect at a storage facility. 10'x 40' outdoor gravel space for about $45 a month. I throw a full cover over it when I put it there for Winter storage in early November. ("rural" storage facility 5 minutes from our suburban home)
  • We're in the same boat - against HOA rules. So we use a local U-Store type of place that also has a back lot for RV's. Just shop around - we pay $30/mo for the smallest spot. Drive around, look at what else is parked there. Look at their security. Are there people there around the clock?
  • My advice on price vs. proximity is to prioritize proximity. I think it is very important to keep an eye on what's going on in the storage lot. Closeness also promotes maintenance and inspection. I think it's good to knock out some little project without taking distance into account.
  • Thanks for all the input.
tpi, that was sort of my thoughts also.
Seems as though this upgrade from a B to a B+ is going to be costly! Upgrade vehicle cost, storage cost, and more than likely an additional/rplacement vehicle, as the B was our second vehicle.
    thanks

If possible go Roadtrek or true B. Homeowners associations typically won't gripe about something that looks like a full sized van.
  • Thankfully my HOA also does not permit boat, RV or comm'l vehicle storage on site. Allowed 24 hrs on site to load. I look for secure, locked storage with 24/7 access. I prefer storage facility that has mostly well kept RVs & boats and not daily in and out comm'l vehicles. Distance and price are next considerations and cameras are a nice feature. I do not like field, weed or grass type parking - too much possibility of rodents. My current lot is about 10 miles away @ $90/mo. Sided on 3 sides by 8' fencing with barb wire at the top and the 4th side by an alligator infested pond. Yes, alligators are far more preferable to me than mice.
