Disconnect hose, look inside rig's connection point. There should be a small nose sticking out. This is the check valve plunger. Push on it gently. it should be spring loaded and return when you release it.

Very good advice! It is usually hard to see into the inlet enough to see the end of the plunger clearing the flange. you have to really get up CLOSE! :B
You forgot to mention that he needs to have his water pump ON while doing this.
Well, of course. The system has to be at pressure to verify the correct operation of the valve....
