I am brand new to the RV world and am in the final stages of purchasing a used 2004 34 ft. gas Fleetwood SW. What is the best insurance company to go with? I contacted Good Sam and the agent ran my quote thru several companies with the lowest one coming thru National General Ins. Co. However, when I looked at reviews on line for this company, everything said stay away from them, as they are a terrible company to deal with. This was quite surprising to me because I would have thought that a very reputable organization such as Good Sam would have received feedback on National General Ins.by now and would not be recommending them. Any advice would be extremely appreciated. Thanks.

Find an insurance agent that specializes in RV insurance. There are ads in all the major RV magazines. We use Miller Insurance out of Portland OR who hooked us up with Progressive. They are independent agents, and will also give you quotes from lots of underwriters. We've found Progressive to be extremely responsive to claims, and also rather prompt on adjusting your rates in response. :)There are other national agents who advertise . . I think the Escapees have one of their own, among others.al

Did you try and get a quote from your local auto insurance agent?I went through State Farm (who I have both my auto and Home Owners through) and saved more on my RV insurance since I was "bundling".

USAA does not write RV in my state and they put me with Progressive 5 years ago, One claim and they paid on the spot 3K

We have had super luck with Allstate, but they have our cars, house etc.

Cheapest is not always the best. Some of these cut rate insurers are great on the wallet until you need them. You always should take into consideration - how accessible and responsive will they be when you need them?

I have had success with Progressive in the past but right now they are trying to say I have a $250 deductible on a windshield when my policy says plain as day "if we can't repair it we will replace it with no deductible" We will see tomorrow when I pick it up!

I "had" a very good quote from Blue Sky insurance until today. I called to confirm that they were quoting the same coverage as our current Progressive coverage and it appeared that they did. However, the agent said he wished we had gotten together yesterday as they had a price increase as of today July 1. The quote went from $933 to over $1700! I politely said thank you and goodbye and hung up. I could never do business with a company that handles things that way.

"Best" rate depends on your credit score and your history. If you're a full timer, your quotes are limited as only a few companies write full timer policies. Make sure you go with a company that is familiar with motorhomes or you may be disappointed come claims time....we use Explorer Insurance for full timing insurance.....Dennis

We have had four different insurers in the last six years - Progressive, National Interstate, Geico (who insures our cars), and now Hartford through AARP. They all seem to low ball you the first year or two and then start raising your rates dramatically. Last year Geico was considerably cheaper than the others we checked, especially National Interstate. This year they raised their rates about 35% so we went to Hartford which was about 40% less than Geico. This is all for identical coverage. Who knows who we will have next year? As long as the company is reputable, I have no problem going with the least cost and changing every year if necessary. Insurance is insurance.
