redo red max pro

I did the RMP process (Actually Zep) two years ago and would like to give it a couple of new coats. So my questions are:

1) Do I need to do the entire process again? Meaning BKF and TSP?
2) If not, what is the best way to prepare the surface?
3) Has anyone done this and what were your techniques?

Thanks

I've used the Turtle Wax wash stuff a couple of times with no problems. What you have to avoid is the various roof cleaners which can cause problems. Also you could have problems with commercial truck washing places if they use a strong detergent.
  • No wax at all. I would use Simple Green or Dawn in a strong concentration. TSP is best to remove all traces of wax, but strong dish washing soaps work well.
If there is any wax at all, the Zep/Rex Max will peel off in short order.

  • Main thin is to get the thing really clean least you imbed the surface dirt in the layers of ZEP. Give it a good bath with your favorite dishwashing soap and if you are happy with how clean it looks start applying the ZEP. I personally did not find the BKF very hard to do and it really cleaned things up. But before you go the the trouble of reapplying, I'd try a good bath and some spray on / wipe off detailing product.

I tried Zep floor wax remover and that didn't work too well because of the vertical surface. Reapplied a few times with streaking, I also tried ammonia diluted. That didn't work well either. Then TSP and BKF. Finally rubbing compound on a buffer. Still can't get all the streaks and drip marks off. Gave up and reapplied RMP over it. Not great like the first coat a few years ago.

Zep makes a stripper that works specifically for removing the Zep coating (not wax). It works really well. Be certain to dilute it and wear gloves.

Also, most buffing compounds contain wax. Deadly to the Zep coating. It will flake off soon. Wax is the enemy of Zep.
  • Just redid mine. I did not remove the old coats, just cleaned with detergent and Awesome for the stubborn spots. Rinse well and wipe to remove any soap residue. Looks like new. I try to recoat once a year.
  • My once a year (in the spring early summer) detail cleaning I try and strip as much of the coating off as possible with reasonable effort. Otherwise you will get a buildup of the wax just like a floor.

I'll use a strong soap solution to stripe the wax. Found LA Awesome from the Dollar Store works pretty well mixed up in a gallon garden pump sprayer. I'll pretreat small sections before I go over with a white scrub pad and a solution of dish detergent. If the Awesome solution dries you'll have to retreat so only do small sections at a time in strips top to bottom. Stubborn dirt or such I'll hit with liquid Bar Keepers Friend. Usually only need a few light coats of Red Max to restore.
