Replace water pump in a 300 cummins c series

I know it's probably a dumb question but do I need to drain out the coolant before I undo the water pump?
I got to do this on the street and not make a mess.

    If you need to ask this question you should find someone else replace the water pump

    If your luck is like mine, there is going to be mess, so I would drain the coolant into a pan first.
