Replacing broken DVD player

We ended up buying an inexpensive DVD player with RCA connections and plugged it into the back of the Memorex. The Memorex functions as the receiver and the new DVD player sits beside it.

It might be easier to get a low-end surround sound receiver and a separate blu-ray (or DVD) player. The receiver would have all the amplifiers for the various speakers, and let you switch between various audio and video inputs for the TV, possibly also replacing the box of many buttons (at least for a single location).

Thanks for posting. Looks like most of the others where one has to just put the correct jack on the ends of the current wires for the various speaker locations. No "splicing," just attaching a jack, which should not be too difficult.

Just wish I could find the player unit alone without having to buy all the unneeded speakers. :(

Note that Amazon has this item OUT OF STOCK and does not know if it will ever be back in stock again. Which is also why they do not even have a price on it.

It rather depends on the speakers as their efficiency can vary quite a bit, but generally it's a lot less than many people think. Deep bass (as in subwoofers) generally would need more power to sound good, but most RV speakers don't even try to produce deep bass, so that's a moot point.

Sound loudness is perceived logarithmically, and sound levels measured that way. Doubling the power increases the volume by about three decibels. Most of the time, your speakers would very likely be driven by a good bit less than a single watt on average--but it's the transient peaks that are of more interest, and where the extra power can be useful.

I have been looking for one without speakers as well and haven't found any. In fact, when I do my search, it usually brings up the same question being asked in other forums of various types.

I have an email into Crutchfield regarding this to see if they can come up with anything. I'll be happy to pass that along.

BTW...when searching, I did find one unit with speakers that still had the "old" hookups so a converter would not be needed.

Question: In a motorhome, how many watts to the speakers is "enough" for a good quality surround sound experience. Don't need to blow the doors off, but want to be sure I'm not going with too little.

Since it has the audio included in with the DVD player, Google Home Theater with DVD. That should bring up a list of suitable replacements.

Yup that converter will preserve the function provided by the control panel switch box.

I did a bit of searching, and blu-ray players with built in amplifier for speakers do exist, but I couldnt find a single model that didn't include the speakers too. That adds to the cost, and then what to do with the extra speakers?

Another option is an automotive unit. A previous poster mentioned Crutchfield - they are hard to beat for selection.

You might need an installer to help you, but that unit has an amplifier for speakers and analog video outputs just like your failing Memorex
