roof air

We have two roof air conditioners, Dometic, worked well while in Florida, came home in January did not use until this week, 7-12. When we started them up, outside temp high 80's to 90's there was a odor, like wet towels or something like that, not a bad smell just a different odor. Has anyone had this problem and if so what to do?

  • Is it safe to blow out the drain hose at the a/c from under the unit (behind filter) or should I go on top to do that and clean out the evap pan also?
  • Yup, you need to clean the EVAPORATOR. Done from on the roof.

Get a commercial evaporator cleaner from any box store.

Stuff old towels/rags in the duct to the coach so you don't get cleaner or water down in the coach.

Two universal issues with Roof Air (And for that matter most all air) is this. The air intake filters get dirty and clogged leading to all sorts of issues (not this one however)

And water and debris can settle in the drip tray and water path leading to this issue

Remove outer cover and clean clean clean

You may also need to remove the inner cover over the evaporator (Cold end) and clean the rest of the tray

You may also have a dead rodent in an air duct.
  • Mildew from the FL Humidity......Evap Coil, Discharge plenum/ducts
    Cleaning required
  • How ofter do you clean the filters. They should be cleaned every month when in use. The dirt thay gets past them will make the evaporator coil smell pretty bad after a short time.
